Has anyone here rode/owned both bikes? Looking for some real world comparisons. While they are direct competition, they're aren't many comparison reviews. The F800gt has piqued my interest lately.

I've ridden both - I've owned a VFR and can say that, from a purely technical standpoint, it was one of the best bikes I've ever owned. Sewing machine mechanics, supreme reliability, huge available parts supply and OHHH that SOUND of the V4.

If these are the two bikes on your list, for me it's a no brainer. I'd look for a 98-2001 VFR 800 as I think it's the best of the breed. The later bikes are heavier, they no longer had the gear driven cams etc.

On my list of bikes to own again

That BMW 800 is a very boring motor imho. It's not bad, just boring. V4's on the other hand...

 Interesting. Have the Vfr so was more curious as to how the F800 compares.

While not a direct comparison to the VFR, I like the F800GT and it has been on my short list since it came out a couple years ago (only bagger on my list actually). It is extremely light weight for a touring rig. It is BMW reliable. It is no maintenance belt drive. I rented and rode the GS version of this bike with the 2 cyl motor in AK for a week. The motor won't set your hair on fire but it is dead reliable and smooth running. I had no complaints regarding the motor (caveat: I weigh 120 lbs in full riding gear with rocks in my pockets).
