Today, U.S. Sen. Mike Lee (http://cqrcengage.com/amacycle/app/thru?ep=AAAAC2Flc0NpcGhlcjAxBSCk-4lIScqYppycmft3t-q0LvKn9pJjZ43qrmN2ZCMC3NmHafgv1QmmbQNY0iaLjFzvIPEG 4ZFD7ntSy1AxIDAf4b113KlOD3MuOXgdaK7Gk2fmKgic6dSupf LB4Xy7SXgGyP3Pdaec_kW9xVpMW3JhZsi3vRmUSiUDL2m_id8&lp=0) (R-Utah) introduced an amendment to H.R. 22, the DRIVE Act, which would eliminate the Transportation Alternatives Program.

This change would eliminate all funding for the Recreational Trails Program because the RTP derives its funding from the Transportation Alternatives Program.

The RTP was created on a bipartisan basis in 1991 to provide funds to the states to develop and maintain recreational trails and trail-related facilities for both non-motorized and motorized recreational trail uses.Funds for the RTP come from excise taxes generated by the purchase of fuel used for off-highway vehicle recreation -- by snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, off-highway motorcycles and off-highway light trucks.

Throughout its history, the RTP has proven to be very successful in helping to fulfill the needs of recreationists of all types. The program currently funds recreational trails across the country at a level of $85 million annually. Losing this program would be a big loss to both motorized and non-motorized recreationists.

In addition, RTP-funded projects attract trail users region-wide, and bring added tourism revenue to local communities.
