He lived, amazingly!

Target fixation strikes again. He hit the breaks and stood the bike right into that truck. Looked like he was having a lot of fun before it happened.

Scary video and it just happens instantly.

Pretty quick response time from the chopper (~15min). I've seen countless wrecks on the Tail of the Dragon and its usually a 30-40min wait for a chopper or 15min for an ambulance.

That... and not target fixating. The slow motion seemed to show a mid corner bump when he straightened up his bike. His lines through the preceding corners were terrible for a two way road. Sure, there is no center line but he could have ridden it better.

Yeah, he was purely on the wrong line to begin with.

As for being on the brakes, thats exactly where you want to be in a situation like this. More brake = More traction. Had he known what to do (instead of probably panicking) he could have tried closed the radius up by slowing instead of going straight into the front of the truck. Beings that it was a blind corner there probably wasnt much he could have done though.

I'm assuming rear brake use. I think the rider would have been just fine if he did not freak out and just held his line.

Yeah, if you're going to hit something as big as a fire engine it may as well be a fire engine that way you at least have it filled with people who have some basic if not extensive EMT training!

So, it looks to me that he did a big stab of the front brake, causing the front wheel to lose traction, then suddenly lets go causing it to regain traction. This is all the handlebar wiggling you see.

There are lots of ways for him to avoid this crash, one is way back at the beginning of the ride and deciding that "keeping up" with his buddy isn't the most important thing. If he had been riding his own ride to begin with he would have been better off. Second is when he sensed danger to apply (not grab / stab etc) the brake to slow down. Decreased speed = tighter radius always. It for sure still would have been underwear soiling scary, but not flight for life scary.

In his defense it appears he was wearing full and appropriate gear, which is probably part of the reason he ended up as well as he did. That and the fact (like Stuart Little noted) that the first responders were immediately on the scene. Good primary care is critical in trauma situations, the sooner it can get there the better.
