Hey CSC,

Think I might be done with 'street' for awhile and I'm looking at crossing over to dirt.

Saw one of these and wow, they look fun! Timbersled!

(It's a kit to convert your dirt bike to a snow bike)

Two for sale - has anyone tried a snowbike?

http://denver.craigslist.org/mcy/5911602766.html for $9500

A coworker found a craigslist ad back in Feb or Mar by an Aspen based company renting them. A group of us rented two for the day and had a blast. They don't steer like anything else at low speed but feel natural pretty quick at speed in the deeper stuff. Very fun.

Never ridden one but have no doubt they are one of the most fun machines ever invented by man.

They look fun, and I'm sure they are fun. My hangup has always been cost versus how much would I actually use it.

If I had followed that rule, I'd have thrown the wife out a loooong time ago!

Just an FYI: I can order the new snowbike conversion kits from Camso (yeah the folks that have been making snowmobile tracks forever).

https://camso.co/en/products-solutions/atv-utv-dirt-bike/products/dts-129?brand=11881&productType=11914&p=PS02

Retail is $4799, CSC discounts apply.

I have been riding them for the past couple of years. There is a little more to it than just slapping on a kit but its all easy. For this year, I am on a KTM 450 XC with a Timbersled ST. Last year I was on a KTM 500 EXC with a Timbersled LT. Both setups are great and have their pros and cons. Once I get the 450 dialed in I think it will be the better of the two.

Couple of things that need modified on the bike to make it perform.
1. A thermostat. The engine runs really cold when snow is packed around it. You can order a external thermostat from Wattman for about $120.
2. Stiffer springs. You have mechanical leverage on the ski compared to a tire. I normally run a .46 rate but I use a .52 in snowbike form. I am roughly 165 pounds. You big boys will need to go up higher on the rate.
3. Air forks suck. All brands of bikes are impacted. The extra load, extra pressure you apply, and the cold contribute to blown air forks.
4. Lights help. You don't have to have a headlight but some form of a lamp helps. I am running a independent lamp that runs off of a battery and not the bike.
5. If you are over 200 pounds, go with a LT. The extra float is appreciated.

We have sold and converted a ton of these and as mentioned, I ride this as my primary snow sport. Happy to answer any questions. Best is to email me at joe@funcentercycles.com as I don't check the form that often.
