ok this is a newbie question.
do you normally change your sprockets when you change the chain?

what would you recommend? should I stay with a OEM or go with a aftermarket?

what are the differences? I see x link, closed lnk, 520 530??

is there any info where I can get edumecated?

Depends... how old are the sprockets? It's always a good idea, but not always "necessary". Considering you can get a front and rear for ~$70. you might as well. What I *would* recommend is going with a 520 setup if you haven't already...

Thanks

A word of caution about 520's.

This is strictly anecdotal: My son has a GSX-R1000 and that bike eats 520's. He is lucky to get 3000 miles out of a 520 chain, even though he maintains his chain properly. Also, he is constantly having to adjust the chain because of stretch.

My 2 cents.

If the bike has sprockets other than the stock sizes, you will tend to go through chains faster (no matter what size chain you run). It also depends on what type/brand of chain you get, as well as what you define as "going through chains".
Most people can get 7K-15K miles out of a chain, and a lot of that depends on riding style (and bike use) too.
I highly recomend the 520 set up, hardened sprockets, and a DID X-Ring chain. I have run that on my bike for the last 7 years. I also have about 5 years on a DID Xring chain on a bike which was dropped 2 gears in front and up 1 in back. The X rings are probably one of the best set ups you can get because the little moving parts are sealed inside gaskets which keeps them well lubed and protected.
I would hit up Joe Logalbo (jplracing) and see what he can do for you...I get, like, all my parts through him.

The answer is yes. Sprockets and Chains wear together, plain and simple. Can you get away with not replacing chain if you regearing the bike if the chain isn't fully worn out? yes... I'm about to regear my biek that has 5,000 miles on the chain and its been maintained meticulously to the point I think I can get 15k easy out of the chain. I'm making the call to keep the chain and put on new sprocks...

Click HERE for a nice resource for sprocket selection, speeds and rpms affected. (http://www.rocketjohn.com/files/mphrpmv3.xls)

modified a version that Oscar Domondon built off the Ducati list...

Input your values in BLUE, rear tire value based on a 180/55-17 size.

The values included are off my 998.

I usually get ~20K per chain. When I replace it I replace everything ---- including the lock washer. (Forgot to bend the tab one time and the counter shaft sproket backed itself off at speed --- bummer )

Thanks Mel.

Either PM me or email me at joe@axismoto.com with your bike info and I will see what I can do
