View Full Version : 3rd annual CSC Vegas trip!!!

:D Ok, our dates our set.... The group attempting the 50CC will be stopping in Vegas for the night en-route to San Diego. As per usual, we'll be taking a very scenic route through Utah which includes fantastic views, boarders several Nat'l Parks, hours and hours of twisties/sweepers and Zion!. Bring your camera!!

Vegas is approx. 750 miles from Denver. The scenic route adds another 75 miles or so, thus you can expect to be in the saddle for up to 14 hours. Obviously some of you may not have ridden that distance, nor would you have to go all the way. A very nice stopping point would be Torrey Utah. It's elevated, forrested and approx 1/2 way. As a last resort, we'd still like to have riders cross into Utah with us and then make alternative plans. Our 1st year doing this I think we had 8 riders make it to Moab, and it was a lot of fun. We already have 1 confirmed rider who is just doing Vegas, so you're guaranteed to have a traveling companion going home.

We will be departing Memorial Day weekend on Saturday 5/24/03 @ 1:00 AM :o , sharp @ Morrison & C-470,(Conoco station-our new mtg spot for the club) This start time was designed to get us into Vegas so the 50CC crew could relax in the pool etc. and still enjoy some of Vegas-as we'll only be in the city for approx. 20 hours. You on the other hand can stay as long as you wish! This time will also allow for us to escape the intense heat or @ least minimize the amount of time we'll be in it. I can tell you last year on the return trip home,(it was 4 weeks later than this trip) it was so hot the soles of my boots felt like they were on fire! Ideally you'll have the ability to drink fluids while riding which will help tremendously.

For those of you not familiar, Vegas does and will sell out during this holiday weekend. In fact, while looking for a room earlier today it was difficult,(because 50CC-ers only need 1 night) to find one as most casinos are requiring a 2 night minimum stay. So if you're the least bit intersted in going,(the ride itself is worth it) I'd consider booking a room sooner than later!!

Lastly, If you're relatively new to riding this would be a good trip to go on. You'll have the ability to open her up all you want,( for the more experienced riders), but I'll be on a "bagger" and traveling @ a slower pace and nobody will be left behind.
The return trip home can easily cut 2 hours off your drive time assuming you take I-15 to I-70.

Hope you can make it!!

a 2 night minimum?! good ol' vegas. those wishing to only stay one night should work out a deal with those staying more- as in, if i am able to go, i would stay in vegas a few days and i am willing to share my room with the one nighters. it would be a giant slumber party. :bday:

i may actually be moving to vegas here within the next couple months or so. i am working on my racing, ie getting the licence, fixing my 600 cc race bike, and getting in all the track time i can. vegas has a better race scene than colorado (extra heat but no snow and better tracks). i have a friend there who is looking for a house mate, too. everyone will be welcome at my home, assuming i do move there. a free spot to bunk when you go to vegas.

Hey Harry, Long time, No See....This sounds like fun. Which hotels were you looking into? I would probably be there for two nights and then come home. If anyone comes across some sweet deals let me know, I will look into my side of the house. John Elway just built two new dealerships there and word has it there are some breaks to be had. I will let you know!

Hi Chris,
We need to go for a putt some time. We've been riding almost every weekend.

We already have a hotel from 5/24 @ Amerisuites, which is just behind the Aladin. They were the 1 place that would allow for a 1 night stay. Palace Station is pretty reasonable and the Stratosphere is usually cheap. Obviously you'll pay more right on the Souther part of the "strip". If that's where you want to be, Bally's is a nice choice,(not too pricey)

Either way, I do hope you make the trip.

I just want to make sure I am getting this straight, we leave at 1:00 in the morning and arrive in Vegas around 5 pm, or is there a stop for the night in between?

Chris

Harry Biker
Sun Jan 12th, 2003, 12:08 PM
You are correct-although I'll predict a 4pm arrival.
However, my hope would be that we'll have numerous participants and certainly riders that don't want to make the trip in 1 shot can get together and camp/motel it 1/2 way.

Additionally it has been brought to my attention that some riders may prefer to do the quickest route to Vegas. That would be I-70 to I-15. I've made this trip with 1- 45 minute stop and 1- 30 minute stop,(plus reg. gas stops @ approx 10-15 minutes. in 11hrs. 50 minutes. That tells me this trip could easily be made in 11 hrs. Albeit this route is not the same as the scenic trip.

I have gone ahead and scheduled those days off, checking into rooms this week. I so far am planning on staying two nights and coming back Monday. 8) Way to go Chris!

FF, go back & read your profile again- You can do this ride. Several years ago there was a seasoned rider that rode the entire Iron Butt Rally,(11 days, 1000+miles/day) on a Suzuki GS"125"!!!!

This is not a race. None of our group rides are races. Yes, there will be streches where people may whick it up a bit, but you will not be left behind because you are new or not as confident or even for lack of bhp. Ideally your bike can hit 80 as there's a few streches on 1-70 & I-15 where you don't want to be flattend by a semi
Run out of gas though and the buzzrds will et your eyes out 1st
Kidding of couse.

As far as when you should decide by.........yesterday was good. It is a long enough ride that you might appreciate an air conditioned room as it can get toasty. I have mine :)

If you have not been riding much since the holidays, I'd highly encourage you to do so to get more miles under yer arse.

Either way, bike or no bike, I'll try and go out there. If I get my summer promotion from the Mirage early enough, and it covers those days, I'll try and hook as many of you up with a good deal on a room as I can!

I'm thinking I'll do something along the the lines of May 17th - 26th.

How many people will be staying in Utah the first night?

I did a 400 mile trip this past summer, and I was more than ready to be done by the end. I must be getting old or something. :) Then again, I'm not a small person. ;)

I was thinking about taking Tuesday off from work as well just to make sure I had time to get back. I start getting really cramped up after about 6 hours of riding. I'll start looking for hotels tomorrow night for Vegas.

How do you guys typically pack? I have both a nice Kelty hydrated backpack and a RoadGear tail pack. I try to throw gear/rain gear, small med kit, etc in the tail pack and my clothes in the backpack. What are the temps like at night through the desert?

Brandon,
You'll increase your comfort level dramtically if you can get your R. hand off the throttle when you want to,-thus a throttle lock. You may get lucky and find an O-ring for < $1.00

Also, if you run w/a tank bag, ideally you can still lay down on the tank inside of the comfort bubble of your shield.

I've seen people pack for this trip looking like the Beverly Hillbillies, and I've seen ole Paulie w/ nothing more than a backpack and a thirst for beer!!

Lastly, I'd recommend being able to drink water while riding with some type of bladder, ibuprophen or similar and possibly bicycle type shorts w/ the pad for yer arse. Music is also VERY NICE to have along.

The possibility is always here in Colorado to get snowed on any month of the year. That being said, I'll predict perfectly comfy temps. 60 or so? Also, the "graveyard shift crew",(there's another group riding 12 hours before us) should also enjoy hitting the desert when it's not scorching.

Hey Harry-
Since the LV trip will be my first long journey, I'm planning as many "trainning" rides as I can. Did abour 175mi this weekend. Got any cool routes 'round the state you might suggest that might be good for a newcomer?
Thanks-

Actually, I forgot to mention my backpack is a camelback one, so it has a ~2 liter pouch. I have a tiny Mp3 player which I haven't really had a use for, so that should be nice. I tried earplugs on my last long trip and didn't like them.

Ass padding. Good call.. I still have the stock F4i seat (ouch!). I don't know that I want to buy a Corbin before then.

I'll have to check in to getting a throttle lock. I have a gift certificate I won at the CO Powersports track day, so maybe they carry them. Otherwise I'd assume its something I could pick-up at Performance?

If I could pick-up some adjustable pegs before then that would be a big help too I'm sure... last time the big problems I had were with my wrists and knees getting tired/sore.

Sounds like I should be able to stay warm with my 'warm weather' gear + rain gear (it helps to break those cold evening winds).

Hey FF,
glad to hear your thinking of training. Ain't nothin better than time in the saddle.

I'd highly recommend you not play with those silly boys in their chase for the entrance into the Iron Butt Assoc. just yet!

Here's my suggestion/s.........
Now I'm not sure how many miles you can currently comfortably sit in the saddle, so your "training runs" should be designed to:
1)develop the muscles you'll use while riding long days.

2)test out your comfort level on your particular bike. Make your GS fit you, by identifying your 3 points of contact,(seat, bars, pegs) and change prn.

3)test out your riding gear,(electric gear just fricking works!)

4)time yourself from start to finish of your ride. Pay particular attention to your gas station stops. You should do this even if you have no desire to become an endurance bike rider-IBA. This will help lesson anxiety.
Example- I know that my normal solo pace,(which is fastest) has me riding 800 miles in 12 hours. That's 100 miles in 90 minutes. you do not have to be that fast, but you should know how long it takes you to ride say 250 miles. 15 minute fuel stops max should be good when you are timing yourself,(@ other times stay until the cows come home)

I think a nice ride is doing a rectangle from Denver to Limon and then take 86 homeward into Kiowa/ Franktown area then Parker road home. Now this is not the most scenic ride, but hwy 86 is pretty nice and it's not congested. It'll be approx a 200 mile ride and that's a nice starting point for learning and training your range. Stay hydrated. Some long distance riders take ibuprophen prophylactically

I'm up for a ride almost anytime, so just put up a post with details.
Have fun.

Don't worry, I know I'm not up for a ride with the big kids just yet. This weekend helped though. My T-rex-on-a-bike experience and 75mi on sat with a 100+mi ride past Selida and down 105 to monument was a sweeeet ride :D Feeling much better in the twisties.

Harry,

I am glad you mentioned the "Triangle", however I have been starting from Parker to Franktown. Take 86 out to Limon and then cut West on 24 back to the Springs. From there 25N to home, this run is 236 miles. 86 is awesome out there, you are usually all alone, however two weekends ago "Black Ice" was a major issue for about 15 miles before you hit 70. But that is obviously weather determined and not all of the time.
If anyone wants to start running this with me, please let me know.

I don't think I'll make the Vegas jaunt, but I'd definitely be interested in tagging along on some "training" rides. I'm planning about a 1000 mile trip (in one day but not timed) late spring or summer to Texas, and I've never done more than a 400-mile day on my bike. :D

triangles.rectangles...I was never very good @ geometry :)
You're right though, your triangle you mentioned is a nice ride.

FF,
Perhaps the time to increase your displacement is now! We both know which model you want. The current deal @ BMW has never been better-ever! Assuming you'd finance, 1.9% interest for up to 60 months and, 90 days no payments and BMW then pays your 1st 5 payments!!!!!! this deal lasts until the end of Feb. You would not even make your 1st pyment until Dec.,(assuming you waited til the end of Feb.) and you'd have plenty of time to sell your Zookie.

Sunday works for me as well, I keep my bike at my dealership (nice and warm from the cold during the winter). So, lets plan on Sunday, around 1100 or 1130, give it some time to warm up. Arapahoe Crossing, Boarders bookstore. Any questions please call me at 720-220-4079..it is my cell. Again the trip is 235 miles give or take and it is hassle free. Lunch in the Springs, a good ride home.

I did it last year on my R1 - the Gixxer can't be that much worse!

HINT: Change your riding position frequently - I alternated between:
- sitting almost upright (with just enough weight on the right hand to maintain speed)
- normal riding position
- laying down on the tank bag with feet hooked over rear pegs (no pressure on the wrists at all this way!)

It doesn't affect handling, as it makes no geometry changes to the bike. It'll just make you sit up more.

I put genmar risers on mine, and like it a lot better for my usual commute stuff, and I'm sure distance riding will be a lot better. I put in about 100 miles this weekend and definitely noticed a difference (also the sargent seat was a BIG, GOOD change!).

Hoopty
Thu Jan 30th, 2003, 02:00 PM
It doesn't change the geometry of your suspension, but it does put less weight on the front tire which would change handling characteristics, right? :?

Define handling. Less weight on the bars will mean you transfer less road influence to the rest of the bike and braking won't dive as much, but turn speed is mainly influenced by the rake and trail of the front end, and length of wheelbase. However in a "correct" riding position, your arms would not be supporting your body weight anyway so mainly the risers are for upper body comfort. You won't really see an impact on the bike itself. The only place I can think where you might notice a difference is the track, just because your body position won't be quite as aggressive with your hands up higher.

Very Cool Hanna. Now will you be surfing with the day crew or the night crew? I'll assume,(I know I shouldn't) that you'll be rolling with the Friday afternoon crew.

For anyone thinking about leaving with the night crew let me assure you we have several bikes that'll turn the night into day thanks to our good friends @ PIAA and similar. The night crew as a reminder will be rolling all the way into Vegas and should arrive no later than 4pm.

Is there anyone going to Vegas that is planning on leaving @ 1am @ Morrison,(not counting the 50CC crew-I know where you'll be)?

Also, who all's staying @ Amerisuites?

<snip>
Also, who all's staying @ Amerisuites?

I will be rolling with the Friday crew, as assumed. However, based on last year's experience, I'd like to throw this in for discussion by that crew :

Instead of leaving Fri luncthime, riding to GJ & staying there for the night, then having a huge day (700 miles? ) Sat to get to Vegas, consider:

Leave around 0800 Fri morning, lunch in GJ, then on to Blanding for the night. 500 miles, arrive NLT 5pm.
Leave 0800 Sat morning, go through Natural Bridges Nat'l Monument to Torrey, over Escalante, through Zion and on to Vegas. 500 miles, arrive NLT 5pm.

Sound good? We did this route last year and it worked very well. It also gives margin should anything (fingers crossed) go wrong, and allows newer riders to get used to long-distance (ahem, I know it's not a SS1K or 50cc) riding gradually. Oh and it makes the whole thing a little less of an ordeal for those long-distance touring machines, the Gixxers

Just a suggestion... I'm not attached to the above, but thought you may want to mull it over.. :D

If I go, I wasn't planning on stopping in Grand Junction for the night. I didn't check how many miles to Torrey, but that was the original thought.

Morrison to Torrey is about 450 miles, leaving another 350 (appx) miles to Vegas.

I don't know which group I will be riding with. I would prefer to leave Friday, but it will depend on what time that groups leaves. It will be hard for me to get off much before 2pm. I would prefer to make more miles on Friday also - stopping in Torrey as opposed to Grand Junction.

As we get closer, and departure times (and gas stops) get finalized, I may head out by myself later on Friday and hook up with the 1am crew along the way after I get a good nights sleep.

Friday daytime crew; I've booked Amerisuites in Vegas for Sat & Sun nights, but nothing for Fri night. Have we made a decision where we're stopping? Grand Junction/Blanding/Torrey?

IMHO, GJ is way too early; stopping in Blanding makes for a shorter first day, but is dry, but has the advantage of riding through Edge of the Cedars SP & Natural Bridges NM with the sun behind us on Sat morning - it is just stunning. It'd be beautiful in the sunset too, but we'd be riding into the sun:( Torrey is the furthest. Just mulling options.

FYI, the route I was suggesting goes something like this:

I-70 to GJ: 245 miles
S on US50 to Whitewater: 7 miles
S on Rte141 through Naturita to Dove Creek: 158 miles
E on US666 to Monticello: 25 miles
S on US191 to Blanding: 25 miles
---possible overnight stop here (Day 1 total 460 miles)
W on Rte 95 to Hanksville: 151 miles
W on Rte 24 to Torrey: 51 miles
---or possible overnight stop here (Day 1 total 662 miles)
S on Rte 12 through Escalante NM & Bryce Canyon NP to US89: 124 miles
S on US 89 to Mt Carmel Jct.: 55miles
W on Rte 9 through Zion NP to I15 (St George): 57 miles
I15 to Las Vegas:132 miles (Day 2 total: 570 miles or 368 miles, depending on where we stop for the night)

OK, now I've blown my cover completely and shown I am an uber-geek....<sigh>

Hey guys, I've been reading up on the Vegas trip and I am very interested in joining the trek. Anyone need another roommate for the hotel 1st night stop as well as in Vegas? Can anyone give me an est. on cost excluding gas/gambling/non-essentials?
I live in Aspen, and would be joining the trip from there. I could meet the gang in Glenwood Springs, or if someone has a better suggestion? Anyway, looking forward to the trip...I don't know anyone from the group and looking forward to meeting and riding with everyone.

Shorty, you're welcome to hook up w/ the "night crew" and thereby saving yourself more $$ for "Olympic Gardens" ;),(as we are riding straight through-can you do 600-675 miles in 1 day?) We're also staying @ Amerisuites, but I think the room's full. I can't imagine it would be that difficult to find a room/mate. Think about it-

We should be hitting Junction by 5am,(I'll assume Glenwood @ 4am?)

Does the Torrey crew want to meet up and finish the ride together? I'd assume we'd be blowing past Torrey @ 9AM,(or is that too early for ya? :P)
Either way we should all have a meeting spot to grab dinner together in Vegas.

Ralph, Do you have a room yet??

We did the route I posted a few posts back last year and setting off from Denver at 0800 , with a very leisurely lunch stop, got us to Blanding around 1800-ish. Although all of us said "Yeah, I could ride further if we had to", we were definately feeling the day's riding.

My thoughts on this are that the last 200 miles from Blanding to Torrey are on quite a twisty road through canyons and the like, with a probability of deer encounters. Were we to do this in the evening, we'd be tired and riding into the sun - maybe not the best idea. So my thinking is to end the day a little earlier and stay in Blanding for the night (BYObeer if you want it) and ride on to Torrey the next morning - we could still make it to meet up with the night crew there if we wanted to.

Just another $0.02 for everyone to mull over

There are some stretches that are >120 miles without a gas station, but not many and never more than 150 miles. Last year we had a bike in the group that only had a 100 mile range; one of us carried a jerry can of fuel for that bike. We could do that, or change the route....

Friday morning crew, can we have a roll call of range at a steady 80mph? Mine's 160 miles.

It's been a while since I've checked my mileage range from a full tank. As soon the roads are clear, I would be able to tell you. Hanna and I have talked, and we would be more than happy to adjust the route to accomodate people that need more frequent gas stops. Instead of heading to Blanding first night, we would turn off of 70 on to 24 and spend the night in Torrey. On the original route, between Blanding and Hanksville, Utah <Hwy 95> there is literally no gas stations and that run is about 155 miles.
So, what needs to happen is the consensus of who is going and what range they can run with their machines. Again, if your machine cant make that distance, then let us know.....it is ok. :)
We have conjured up the idea of just taking a trip this summer that expands that route and come back to Denver. Apparently the views are spectacular, however our goal here is to reach Vegas in a timely manner and have fun. :D

I believe the Friday am crew will leave Denver at 0800 (suggest meeting in the dinosaur parking lots off I70 near Morrison), arrive Torrey late afternoon Friday, then hook up with the night crew in Torrey at 0900 Saturday and ride on to Vegas together...I would suggest an alternate meeting point - the Conoco gas station in Morrison, just off C-470. We tried the dinosaur lots 2 years ago and there was some confusion - we had people waiting in each of the 3 lots! Nobody was missed, but it was confusing none the less.

The Conoco in Morrison is only 5 minutes from I-70, plus it give people a chance to gas-up right before leaving, grab a cup of coffee or a snack, etc.

When I first mentioned going through to Torrey, I was thinking about departing mid-day (so I would only have to take a 1/2 day off work :D ). As it stands now, I probably won't be going, so it's not up to me - just giving my $0.02.

Sorry I didn't respond earlier, but that sounds great to meet up in Glennwood Springs around 11am. There is a gas station on the right just after you exit I-70, we can meet there. Hey Friday crew, there's 3 places I can find to stay in Torrey:

http://www.travelnow.com/index.jsp?pageName=hotSearch&cid=56554

My vote goes with a cheap room at the Best Western Capitol Reef Resort. They have a hot tub and an outdoor pool - and they're a mile away from the park. Whatcha think?

Also, since we're not doing the superlong twistie route, we could leave later (10, 12 or even 1) and still arrive in Torrey at a decent hour - or we can still set off early and have some time at the other end to see the park. Your thoughts?

Whatever time you think the Friday crew is going to roll past Glennwood Springs let me know and we can meet up there and continue on to Torreys, UT...I vote for noon-ish so we can get some daylight riding in Capitol Reef SP. I went ahead and got a room at the Days Inn for Saturday and Sunday for departure Monday, roomates welcome.

How's thr R1?Nah, it's just a timing issue - my current visa expires on June 2nd. I'm trying to get a different type of visa, but probably won't know until the last minute, so I'll probably be heading back to the great white north the end of May. I know it's 1 week after Vegas, but there's too much going on with the work visa for me to plan anything around that time.

Friday Crew, can't wait to ride with everyone from Glenwood Springs and on...should be a blast. We still arranging to meet around 11 just off I-70? I've been putting the miles on my machine, the weather has been great. I got really lucky last weekend, a written warning for 21 over in a 30 mph zone...oops! The cop just scratched down a warning then asked me about road conditions and where I had been riding. He said he has a 'busa he's been waiting to get out, then he told me to "keep it to a low roar" and walked away. Anyway, if anyone ever wants to get away let me know and I can arrange for rooms really cheap. Looking forward to Vegas.

A couple years back, I was solo coming back in from Vegas on the mighty XX and pulled in @ the West Glenwood exit/Conoco for a quick break when a cop pulled in right behind me. I was sure I was gonna get hassled by "the man" as I had been a tad over the limit.

And they're falling like flies.... I'm weighing up my options; $$ is a bit tight right now. Looks like it may come down to a choice of Vegas or getting the bike jetted  I'll keep you posted.

It's looking like I will be able to get away for this trip. I'm still not sure if I will leave with the early group, the late group or in between and meet up in Torrey. I have been holding back until it got closer to the departure date since last year I had to cancel and lost the money I paid for the rooms.

Have the plans been finalized - departure time and location? Does anybody need a roommate in Torrey or Vegas? I haven't made room reservations and it may be too late in Vegas.

I'm still in, arranging to meet the crew sometime on Friday in Glenwood Springs. Let me know closer to the date what time to be in Glenwood for the hook-up. Anytime is good for me, prefer somtime before noon so we have some time to ride in Capoitol Reef SP.

As of now what is the roll call for Friday departure and on to Torrey, Ut.???

If you decide to roll w/ us, you know how to reach me/us.

If anyone is needing a place to stay, let me know now before I cancel my reservations at Amerisuites.

Hey peeps

Looks like I will not be making the trip to Vegas this year  but instead spending the $$ on getting the bike jetted :D

I have reservations in Torrey (BW Capitol Reef) and Vegas (Amerisuites), so if anyone needs to use them, let me know this w/e. If I don't hear, I'll be cancelling them Monday.

For everyone left going we should arrange to have a short stop in Glenwood Springs for food, fuel or whatever and then ride out together from there since I am riding in from Aspen.

Here is my cell number 970-710-9503

Policewatcher...are you planning on leaving with the Friday a.m. crew? That crew including me...and whoever is left are planning on heading out early friday and staying the night in Torrey, UT. I will be meeting up with that crew in Glennwood Springs. Anyone have an est. time when you will be rolling past Glennwood Springs??? 11 am maybe? I have a room at the Best Western in Torrey, welcome to crash there if you want.

My cell number if you want to give me a ring to get details or whatever:

Time to finalize the details! Who is left for the Friday AM crew? Anyone left going give me a ring to figure out where and when to meet. I will be starting my trip from Glennwood Springs at I-70, all I need to know is what time the crew will be rolling past there.

Hey Sean, I kinda made the last minute decision to head to Vegas on Friday morning as well. I'd be willing to tag along and make it straight through with you and your bud ( <<--thinking of the aches and pains). Would you be up for swinging by me in Westminster on your way to 70W? I could also meet you guys at a rest stop on the way as well. I'll give you a call Wednesday or Thursday to see if we could work something out.

To everybody that's going:

I just spoke to a new member, Nikos, who is interested in going to Vegas, and was planning on leaving at 2PM.

Is there anyone that's actually leaving at 2PM? If so, Nikos would like to meet up with you. It's his first long trip and he'd like to ride with somebody.

If not, besides sdudgeonr6 & R1Guy leaving at 7AM and driving straight thru (and the 50cc boys leaving at 1AM Saturday morning), what time is everybody leaving (and from where). Nikos might be able to adjust his departure time, but would need to know ASAP.

Please call him at 303-902-5845.

Thanks,
Spidey
