Like Motorcycle Racing? Want to get in Free? Get a front-row view? And get Paid?

Consider being a Corner Marshal for the MRA!

I am posting this on behalf of Tim (Timmay!) Young, MRA Track Marshal:
What is a Corner Marshal you ask!?

If you have ever been to a motorcycle road race or watched one on TV, you have more than likely noticed corner marshals. They are the men and women dressed in white, stationed around the track, closely watching the racers as they race and practice the course.

When a racer crashes, they spring into action. The first move will be by the flagger, displaying a warning flag to inform the other racers of the situation on the track ahead. There are several different flags, each with a separate and distinct meaning. While the flagger warns the racers, the rest of the crew is preparing to assist the downed rider(s).

The corner captain communicates by radio with the race officials and medical personnel regarding the situation and its severity. The assist crew goes to work, first attending to the downed rider and then clearing the track of the related debris. When the track is cleared, the crew goes back to their stations to watch the action until they are needed again.

Corner marshals also assist the race officials with rules enforcement. Since they are the closest to the track and have the best view of the racers and their motorcycles in action, they can see more than anyone else. They watch for illegal passes and rough or dangerous riding, as well as spotting possible hazards, such as leaking oil or loose equipment. They also help photographers get to the best possible places around the track while still being safe.

Corner marshals also can be called upon for crowd control, keeping spectators out of hot pit lanes or other areas where the race fans would be endangered. During the slow times between races and practices they keep the track clean by sweeping and inspect the track for debris from the motorcycles.

Prior to the racing season we offer a specialized class instructed by Dr. Ray Rossi on track-side medical assistance. This class covers corner marshal responsibilities, the common hand signs used to communicate in the noisy track side environment, and how and when to move an injured rider. It also covers helmet removal in accordance with the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, as well as very basic interventions that can help an injured rider until the paramedics arrive.

If this sounds interesting to you and you are ready to join this Elite Crew , we would encourage you to call the MRA Hotline @ 303-530-5678, or contact the Track Marshall Tim A. Young at timothysyoung@msn.com or Joe Belef the Corner Crew Coordinator at mracornercrew@comcast.net

    To All,
One of my biggest concerns is adequate staffing. To that end I am asking all of you to put out the word and do your best to recruit new people or retain the existing members. Tell everyone and anyone you think would be interested about corner working. When you are talking to them explain the reasons you yourself do it.
I am preparing business cards to be distributed at Pueblo/ Co Spgs area shops or any other locations where our target audience might see it. Any help in this endeavor would be greatly appreciated.
Good luck, and let's have a great year.

Feh. Schedule is currently F-M. No dice on the working of the corners.

Better check with your pimp before you start workng a new corner.

I'm willing to work corners, have in the past, and was a novice racer a couple of years ago, but can't afford to race this year. If Joe or Tim can set up a schedule, I can work as often as needed.

I believe the next race is in Hastings, Nebraska over the Memorial Day weekend...May 25th-28th, 2007. I think on May 25th there's a practice session from 3-6 p.m.? That may be covered by the Hasting folks themselves. But they'll probably need some help with corner marshals over the remaining weekend and into Monday. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Re: Like Motorcycle Racing? Want to get in Free? Get a front-row view? And get Paid?

Hey guys...it would be great if any of you are headed to Hastings this upcoming weekend and would like to help out as a Corner Marshal. Apparently, we are running well below normal staff levels for Corner Marshals and they have sent out a request for assistance on the MRA board.

    This upcoming weekend would be nice to have some more assistance, but we especially need help down at Pueblo for the follwing races;

    August 11/12
    September 1/2/3
    September 22/23

It really is a good time and a great place to learn about the sport in general.

For your support as a Corner Marshal, they pay you $75/day at Hastings (because of the logistics involved in getting there) and $50/day at Pueblo. They also help to pay for your hotel room with up to $35/night reimbursement. They feed you lunch each day and give you all the water/gatorade type fluids you need to keep you hydrated. Additionally, if you work consecutive days, like Saturday and Sunday, you get an extra $10 and if you work straight through the 3 days, like at Hastings, you get another $20. So, for example, I'm gonna work all three days at Hastings, that 3 x $75 = $225 + 30 = $255. For me. it's not about the money, but it sure helps for any out of pocket expenses.

The atmoshpere is great, the people are great, and the racing is a blast to watch.

Please consider helping out if you have the time. If you are interested, you can pm me for some additional info. or better yet, get a hold of Timothy Young (MRA Track Marshal) at either his email address of timothy.young@greeleypd.com or you can call him direct at (970)213-0733.

You begin your riding career with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.

If you have not yet taken an approved track-safety class, contact jplracing on here to set one up, otherwise, keep an eye out for posts in this forum regarding PMI (or PMP - both referring to the track in Pueblo) for people going down to ride. There aren't many formal track days set up there (at least not that are advertised through this site). Hope this helps.

I think Erico has one scheduled this next month (september). Dont really know how much it is but, I also need to get the course done if I want to get on PMP. Ron Baird told me that they can get that done for people that day.
