Anyone up for a Saddle Sore 1000? June 2nd 2012

    The Route

    Saddle Sore 1,000 rules

1,000 miles in 24 hours. I've wanted to do one of these for a few years now so I started planning it last night.

I'm thinking Saturday June 2nd, 2012. 15 hours of day light and a full moon that night. A lot of riders are able to cover this in 18 hours but I have the route as all twistie roads so I'm expecting 20-21 hours.

I can run it solo but it would be nice to have a partner.

I'm on vacation the following week, so I might actually be able to swing it. I'll keep you advised.

I generally don't like riding at night, and am not sure what my plans are gonna be this summer, so best of luck and have a great ad safe ride!

You may want to rethink this route and doing the mountians at night with the wildlife. There is no reason to handicap yourself before you start. If all you want is the piece of paper I suggest you ride to El Paso and back on I25. The IBA don't care how you get the miles, might as well make it as easy as possible.

Nor is he or his associates responsible for any citations as a result of you hanging with SoCo. Any attempt to coerce, blame, question, or pin your loser-riffic behavior on any of us, or those who are considered us for the night, as well as people we like, to include Salma Hayek and Nicky Hayden, among others, will result in a profanity stricken series of post that mock and taunt you incessantly, as well as many of us adding such insults to our signature lines. Avoid taking SoCo before bedtime. Do not use if you experience faintness, dizziness, inverness, difficulty urinating or blotchy skin. If I steal a line, quote, avatar or image from a post you make on the internet, you're not getting credit.*

While you make a fair point about the wildlife....not very adventurous to just soak up the miles on a damn interstate just to say you did. I'd rather it be an enjoyable ride.

All that said...there's no way I'm going to try to do 1,000 miles in 24 hours on a sportbike. Someday when I get a Kawi Concours I'll be in on this. =P

I don't really care about the certificate but it's a challenge.

Another alternative is driving hwy 50 to CA.

I was planning on doing the same run this summer, except from Ned to San Diego. I could meet you on your way back through ned and head through twin lakes+carbondale, only adding about 30 min compared to the straight through trip. I think if I went all the way down to durango on your route before heading west it'd take too long to get to SD on time though.

Depends on when my meet in san diego is scheduled, of course, but it could happen.

Absolutely positively ZERO hate here. I friggin' love the latest model Concours. I drool every time I see one on the road (not very often) or at Grand Prix. It's ridiculous how much I'd love to have one. My comment was totally serious.

To me, the Concours offers the best of two worlds together, even if not the best at either separately. It's comfy enough for some longer distance touring (even two-up) yet still fun and sporty with plenty of lean in the twisties.

Someday...hopefully before I'm truly an "old man". =)

If you want comfort and still cut up the twisties might as well just go big and get a Goldwing. Good luck on your endevour Clovis.

The desire is a nice sport tourer, not a motorhome on two wheels! That and the fact that Goldwings are WAAAAY more than I intend to spend on a bike. =P

You will be amazed @ what the GW can do in the tight stuff.
Go test ride one or beg a ride some day. Then you and the misses can retire on it.

I watched someone scrape the footboards like it was nothing on a goldwing while in the canyons, looks like its pretty smooth to hit the canyons at some decent speed on them.

My grandfather had large Kawis and Goldwings for years. When my grand parents retired they toured the country on it.

They're cool bikes for their purpose but I prefer a mini goldwing (FJR).

Video of two Goldwings on Deal's Gap

And you think your bike is modified?

Yes, that's a forward looking infrared camera mounted...

True. I was extremely surprised when I heard about how nimble those giant touring bikes are. My friend test rode the new victory cross country and said it had some serious agility compared to it's looks.

I love mine. The only 'issue' I have is it likes to drag peg(feeler) , but it is a big bike and not designed for super tight corners. That, and I throw it over pretty far. 30k miles and no mechanical problems(couple warranty issues), as well as decent fuel economy. Riding anything smaller after is like riding a scooter; it's pretty funny.

Re: Anyone up for a Saddle Sore 1000? June 2nd 2012

I'm all about long trips, for sure, having done about 5k in the last 3 i did. But, unless I absolutely HAVE to get somewhere, doing 1000mi in 24 just to say I did it doesn't appeal to me. I'd rather do 500-700mi days, during daylight, and see the sights while enjoying myself, rather than try and rail in the darkness dodging wildlife. Also, the consequences of falling asleep.......

Best of luck though, and be safe!

Been There -- Done That -- Twice

January 27th, 2003 was the first one. I do not recommend doing one in the winter.

The second one was in July 2005. A more enjoyable ride.

i did one as well, i did 1,008 miles in a little under 17hrs and i did most freeway, which got super old fast, but then again i did it solo. depending on when my training for deployment is i would be game, the busa needs some more miles on it.
