- Go 285 to Johnson's Village outside of Buena Vista
- Go south on US 24 to Ponca Springs
- Turn west on US 50 and go over Monarch Pass
- Go through Gunnison and continue on to Montrose
** This is scenic in itself but the real scenic stuff is all around To-Hell-U-Ride and not really the direct route to To-Hell-U-Ride --------- IMHO **
US 550 South from Montrose to Durango (Red Mountain Pass, Molas Pass & Coal Bank Pass) is THE quintessential route through the San Juan's.
From Durango travel west on US 160 to CO 184 at Mancos. Travel northwest to CO 145 and turn right (north) to Doloras. Continue north on CO 145 through Rico and over Lizard Head Pass to the 'T' intersection. Turn right to To-Hell-U-Ride.
You could just do the US 550 south out of Montrose to CO 62 at Ridgeway then go over Dallas Divide to CO 145 ------ but you'd miss all that is good about the San Juan's. Frankly, To-Hell-U-Ride is waaay overrated in my book ------ but you don't have to read the book if you don't want to.
