Dumb Question: outlining a roadtrip in online maps

I see all the time maps where the routes are highlighted, but I can't figure out how to do it.

If I want to, let's say, plan a trip from Denver to Durango using any of the online map sites, how would I highlight a route, or even plan a route without knowing all the stops along the way? is this something that can be done?

I'm trying to select a number of routes for a trip I'd like to make this spring and compare them side-by-side for mileage and points of interest.

    Any ideas?

Hey Jason...most of the good online mapping sites have tools that allow you to just draw your lines on the map and then save...say Google Maps for instance. Click on a starting point, and then click on another place on the map. One thing to remember, though is that you've got to follow along the roads when you are clicking, so if you're clicking on a road that has lots of twisties, it's gonna take a while to get through the whole thing, from point A to point B.

    Dunno if that helps.
