    Proper Shifting

Hey, I just bought my first bike 03 YZF600r and I have a question on shifting.

I rode my bike this weekend and notice that shifting into 1st while the bike is at still produce a clung and the same think when shifting from 1st to 2nd, the rest of the gears shift smooth. Since they are not teaching the proper way to shift in the MSF course I would like to get your advice on proper shifting.

Normal shifting to me. Just pull in the clutch before hand and you are fine. Unless your doing a wheelie at 100+ then you just slip it in higher. But nobody can do one so don't worry about it.

    Re: Proper Shifting

That clunk is normal. That sound you are hearing, is just the gear box comming out of/ passing through the neutral gear on your bike. The reason none of the other gears do it is because they do not have neutral between them. As long as your pulling in the clutch and shifting your fine. Every bike I have ridden (which is a lot, I work for a bike dealership) does that sound. Practice will help with quick shifting and better timing, but that clunk is there to stay.

I had a FZ6 also and it was actually a feature for Yamaha for it to make that extra "clung" sound to let you know you are in gear.

It can be done. But not from a stop. Its something that you have to learn last I think.

Good luck! I started out on a 99 YZF. Great bike! If you have a significant other, they will appreciate the seat and grab handles!
