    AMA sold Superbike to NASCAR?

Did I miss this? Is the AMA selling the Superbike/roadracing series to NASCAR? Or is this just gossip?

I opened a couple of emails from a Duc list I subscribe to and there's a whole thread about it being a done deal. This is what Roadracing World says (not much):

Here, the list discussion referenced this Cycle News story, also very vague....

For commercial success and media coverage, that would be the best thing to ever happen to the AMA. For actual racing, probably the worst. So, then, would NASCRAP throw timed yellow flags just to artificially make for closer racing? Will the Yosh Boyz have to run ballast and "take some wing out"? The mind reels......

We'll be watching AMA, be warned.....

+1. Best thing for motorcycle racing would be to apply some NASCAR marketing.

NASCAR knows how to market, thats for sure but they would strive to have everyone basically ride the same bike, with only difference being colors and sponsor decals.

So then, will they be stuck with "The Bike Of Tomorrow" with a big Pep Boys wing on the back?

Seems people gripe no matter which way it goes. Suzuki dominates for years and everyone bitches. If they try to do something to make it more competitive, everyone bitches. NASCAR-class marketing would be good. I just got back from New Zealand and there are several thick (at least twice as thick as the rags we have here) motorcycle mags (sportbike) on the shelves everywhere down there.

I realize that racing (no matter what class) needs to have rules that need to be followed to keep racing as inexpensive and competitive as possible. I just like to have some variability that keeps everyone (including the fans) guessing. I would hope that NASCAR would not have the entire AMA field using the same tire compounds for example.

It is amazing how much more popular bike racing is in some parts of the world. I noticed that in Europe as well. I was lucky enough to attend the Isle of Man a couple of years ago. It was sport bike Sturgis. If NASCAR marketing behind AMA racing could help get the US to have that kind of passion and enthusiasm for sport bikes and bike racing, then I'm all for it.

NASCAR marketing would be good. NASCAR telling AMA how to run a race event would be awful. Not that the AMA has all their shit together either, but it works for what it is.

Re: AMA sold Superbike to NASCAR?

I agree with the latter on this subject. NASCAR turned their product into a buisness many years ago and now continue to be the fastest growing spectator sport. We don't have to enjoy it to recognize that the organization is profitable and has a huge following.

AMA needs to take some notes or the series dies from financial starvation. Motorcyclist who will pay to be a spectator at a race are a minority, therefore advertisers and sponsors are hard to find and keep.

MotoGP is racing under the lights. This is a page right out of the NASCAR handbook. I know the other reasons, heat, rider fatigue, etc. I think one of the major reasons is it looks great on TV. It also will increase the fan base because simply, more people do things in the evenings.

Anyway, if this is true I hope it works out. It could bring AMA to prime time. Better sponsorships and more recognition for the sport. Way more pro's than con's.

Re: AMA sold Superbike to NASCAR?

NASCAR rule book is not applicable. C'mon guys use your noggin here. These are two totally different types of racing.

There is a reason AMA sold the rights to advertising and promoting. They were going broke. It's hard to sell tickets and get sponsors to a movie(so to speak) that always has the same ending. I had rather see some changes than no existence of AMA racing at all.

    Just keep an open mind
