    Highside at Pueblo yesterday 04/21/08

Teammate Ara caught this crash on his camera. Not sure who the racer is but I hope he's ok. Its about half way thru, around 2 minutes, coming out of turn 4.

Looks like he his toe was hanging down and he snagged it right about the time the rear tire started to break loose and lay down some black. If his toe had not yanked his leg off the bike and he had good throttle, he might have easily ridden it out.

Hopefully he and his bike are OK. Nasty 'ol turn four. I've had a set of sportbike tires go jelly on me through that turn and up and out of gravity cavity through 5. A wake-up call for sure.

So you are trying to say that his toes dragging caused the highside?

I can't see the video but if it's the guy who had a blue yamaha, it happened right in front of me. I helped pick up his bike and kept asking if he was alright, said he was fine. I about shat my pants hoping not to run him over.

Yeah I noticed you out there… In the future try and move out of the impact zone ASAP to avoid a REALLY bad mishap (AS LONG AS HE IS OK). I think I went around another 5 time before I notice the both of you start to move. If another bike crashes in the corner you both are taken out

Angle of bike was low (he was moving around on the bike in the midst of the turn (see knee), tire broke loose, toe looks to have hit, knee was jerked back and off bike, inside weight transfer stability cut loose, weight transfered up and over bike, bike was pushed further under him (note: in turn his shoulders and head were left of the bike's centerline, throttle cut off, tire hooked up, bike stood up, he popped off the seat and he went overboard. Had he stayed on the gas he it may have just been a lowside. Toe was not the cause, but a big factor.

Good info. Slider...same thing corner workers are told as well. Don't make one accident two.

Pilot got half of it right; the lean angle of the bike. But he is leaving something out and its not toe dragging, shifting his weight around etc.

Great question, Jim. Perhaps a few others could point up some possibilities under what conditions a rear tire could loose traction? Unless there was telemetry data to review, much would be conjecture. But, discussion is good.

Well, I can't get the video to play so all I can offer is sarcasm and snide remarks.

    • low air pressure
    • inadequate tread
    • inappropriate introduction of fluid medium (oil)
    • track surface friction coefficient issue
    • tire construction failure

is it the tire breaking loose, or the sudden traction that sent him flying.

Re: Highside at Pueblo yesterday 04/21/08

    Throttle application error
tire rolling up on it's edge reducing contact patch size etc.

If I assess it correctly the toes dragging are merely a symptom, not the problem.

If I was to deconstruct the accident I would start with the body position. The rider hasn't moved off the seat hardly at all. This is keeping CG high on the bike. This forces the rider to use a high lean angle to negotiate the corner at the speed they are going. The high lean angle results in a reduced contact patch and when he opens the throttle the rear wheel steps out. In a moment of "oh shit!" the rider closes the throttle, the rear tire hooks back up and the bike spits him off.

I don't care what the rest of you think...that's what happened because I said so.

    Rybo.

you dont need telemetry data to draw a conclusion on why the the rear tire lost traction.

Re: Highside at Pueblo yesterday 04/21/08

At 2:54 in the video it appears that his lean angle was maxed out and his front tire washed out. Then his right knee clipped the tarmac and the gravity attack was in full motion. Just a conclusion.

Do we know who the dude is? Let's ask him what he thinks led to it.
