in HS my chemistry teachers husband was a rocket scientist (honest to god he was) he had engine parts all over his garage.. early '99 he blew up his garage while trying to fire up a new engine he was building/testing.. after that.. they built a shop off the main house.
i got a engineer buddy who has a pair of pulse jet engines in his basement.
