Theoretically. Lets say the right chain adjuster of your Kawasaki 650R fell off. What could possibly happen? Lets say the stuff circled in red is missing:

I lost one side once, not sure how long I ran on it, noticed it when it started wobbling the rear end.
The axle started creaping forward on the missing side and missaligned the wheel.
It wore the tire pretty badly but didn't cause a crash or anything.
It was on a cruiser so I wasn't pushing it too hard in the turns.

I'm not sure, but I think/believe: (<-- that, right there, is my disclaimer!)
If the axle is tight within the swingarm, it shouldn't cause an immediate problem, but it would move eventually (as Jeff mentioned: "creeping"). Unless you didn't notice the wobble, and probable bad handling, I don't suspect that it would cause a highside or lowside. It might turn more easily in one direction, and more difficultly in the other. If the axle isn't straight, you're also putting added stress and wear on your chain & sprocket.
If it's your only mode of transportation, I'd ride it as little as possible - preferably only to the nearest dealer to get replacement parts installed.
