8th is great! His dry pace wasn't too hot though. If the race is dry, I think he'll quickly drop back in the field. I don't think anyone could be expected to do much better though.

I like him...I thought he did good considering. Qualifying eigth against the worlds best...He's never been on the track before, riding a bike he's not familiar with and he didn't lay it down like some. He set the 15th fastest race lap out of 18 riders and with his best lap time .733 secs slower than Chris Vermeulen, a regular on the grid. Additionally, on laps 28 and 29 Spies was the 7th fastest rider on the track.
I think that's pretty impressive.

Liberty never came from government. The history of liberty is a history of resistance. The history of liberty is a history of limitations of government power, not the increase of it. Woodrow Wilson, September 9th, 1912

although i agree with you that it's difficult to ride a new bike, he didn't do as well as some would have hoped.
he didn't crash, but essentialy finished last place. de angelis finished behind him, but that was b/c he crashed early in the race.
i hope spies does better, but i'm not betting money on it. i'm sure it was quite a humbling experience for him. hell, no matter how he does it is still an awesome opportunity for him!

Some people may have had unrealistic expectations. He only had one day's practice in the dry, one in the wet, and then the race. He also had to learn the tires. Most importantly, he rode smart and didn't bin it - like rookies do so often. I think that he did great - it's not like he's Johnny Rock Page or anything!
