    Shortening my kickstand

I have a lowered sv650S (1" in the front and 3" in the back) and I have to shorten my kickstand so my bike doesn't fall over, blow over, ya know?! A couple of members brought this to my attention, not that I didn't know it already.

My question is: How shorter should the kickstand be?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

I would goto the dealer and look at the angle it was leaning at stock. Then cut the kickstand so that it will sit at that angle again. Might be able to call a dealer if they are cool and bored enough to help you out by telling you over the phone.

    Re: Shortening my kickstand

There are a few options for getting the angle back correctly:

    1. cut the stand and re-weld the foot pad back on (not my favorite option)

    2. Bend the kickstand. This option will make the stand stick out further when it is up. not super safe.

    3. you can grind the front of the stand and the stand stop, at the contact point. this makes the kickstand angle forward more when down, thus leaning the bike over further. This is my favorite option.

If you want to discuss this more, shoot me a PM. I have performed the 3 option on 2 bikes now and it has worked fine.

I'd try bending it or grinding it down a bit first. Dana took a little bit off of mind with a dremel & it leans over about 5 degrees more which definately makes me more comfortable when I walk away from it!

Buy an extra kickstand FIRST from eBay and then have it altered.
That way if you sell the SV650 later you have the option to go back to stock

Thanks for all your help! I have already looked at kickstands on ebay and I'm going to get one, just in case. Any other info is welcomed!

That is the route I am going too. I just won a lowering link for the CBR600RR on eBay for $25.50. Hell yeah I am cheap. Going to get an extra kick stand and shorten it before I put on the link.

    Good Luck

When we did this on Chris' bike it was a bit of grind/test fit/grind/test fit. It will be the same on yours. You can also install a GSX-R kickstand on your SV (it is shorter and bolts right up, depending on year)

Do you know exactly which year kickstand will bolt right up with a 2005 sv? And do you know if it would lower it enough? Sorry so many Q's!

    Re: Shortening my kickstand

My wifes bike is lowered 2" and we bought an extra kickstand for a spare/return to stock height. We cut stand and welded the bottom back on. We have had the bike for 5 years now and never had a problem with it

the SV peeps recommend that if you do cut it, you cut out 3/4 " and then weld a rod inside the stand (it is a tube) for strength.

I highly resent that!!! Trust me if I had the choice of longer legs I wouldn't choose them, the only time I wish I had longer legs is when riding.

Plus, shorter people are more innovative...

Yeah, it's called "Short People" by Randy Newman. Funny as hell. That was back in the day when it was ok to not be politically correct all the time...

When I shortened my enduro bike down to supermoto sexiness, I just cut and rewelded mine- but then again, I have a welder at the house, so it's much more of an option for me.

    Re: Shortening my kickstand

Yeah that should be the same. Not much has changed between 04 and 07. I have read the stock one is extremely hard to get off (will need a breaker bar and a strong dood). Im getting ready to lower mine a bit to see if my wife can ride it. How tall are you? She is only 5" so I was going to do 3" in the rear and as much as possible up front.
