What's the furthest you've ever gone with the idiot light on?

Last night leaving Boston's, I had already gone 32 miles with the idiot light on (the furthest I've ever gone before was 36.4)... I was 12 miles from home, and knew I'd be taking a risk, but I wanted to see if I could make it. I kept the revs low (5K or under, & stock gearing), as I'd been doing since it came on, and it was highway almost the whole way so I was in 6th gear for most of it. I made it to the gas station by my house and the low fuel odometer read 44.1.

Holy crap! I never had any idea there was that much mileage left in the bike after that light came on! I should've checked my specs long ago (I just checked them now) and done some mpg math - specs say there's 0.87 gallons left when the light comes on (for the '02 R1).

The specs also say that fuel tank capacity is 4.49 gallons... when I filled up, I put in 4.384 gallons... so it looks like I was just about running on fumes!

What's the furthest you've ever gone with the idiot light on?

On the CBR I have gone about 29 miles, just to test it, but I have and will not run it to empty.

On the Hawk I could get maybe 20 miles on reserve and I was bone dry. learned that one the hard way, twice.

Mine was right about there too (~42 miles). Driving up I-25 to Epic Motosports coming from Havana and Parker. My tank holds 4.78 and I remember filling up 4.5

Re: What's the furthest you've ever gone with the idiot light on?

I, like yourself have made it to around 34 miles when I actually ran out. Thankfully it was just a short push to the gas station. I have an 03 r1 so I just don't think I would push it to 44 like you did.

Whats the best total tank you've gotten before? Once I had the light not come on until the mid 180's and I let it run to 202 before I filed up. Maybe I could have gotten 210 out of that tank. I really was doing the speed limit that whole tank which made it so much better then the rest.

I've pushed my bike(RC-51) over the edge three times....I'd like to think I learn from my mistakes of pushing the edge, but not yet. Gotta love pushing your bike on a hot summer day with a leather jacket and helmet on....Good Times!!!

Re: What's the furthest you've ever gone with the idiot light on?

153 miles on my return trip from illinois.
i kept tabs on what my average was for the trip,so i had little concern .
rode the idiot light quite awhile.
fill up was 4.059 with a proposed 4.2 tank.

i have however ran outta gas once on a group ride.
with less than 3 miles to go to the next stop.....

I found out when I was commuting last summer that, with mostly highway riding, minimal stop-n-go traffic, and keeping the rev's under 5K, I can get to almost 220 on a tank. In fact, every tank became a challenge to get better mileage than the previous!

This year, I'm not always so conservative (still keep it under 5K for the most part, but open it up briefly/occassionally) and I'm averaging about 205. This last tank got me 218 miles.

With my new 08' Gsxr1000 I found it to get outstanding highway mileage. When I ride the city a different story all together.

My light turns on at about 170 miles and once I pulled into the garage at 210 miles since the last fillup and just noticed as I hit the kill switch. I made it 3 blocks to get gas the next morning.

I remember when I first got the bike and read that, during the break-in period, I shouldn't rev it past 6,000 RPM (and I like how Yamaha pust this) "for an extended period of time".

Fortunately, 6,000 RPM worked out to be about 94mph!

Re: What's the furthest you've ever gone with the idiot light on?

Luckily I made it about 45 miles or so with the gas light on... I really didn't want to have to push my bike in the summer heat of New Mexico with leathers on...

On a side note, I managed to make it 2 3/4 of a mile in my truck while pulling my trailer (total weight of both >16K) when my dashboard said 0 miles till E

Ran up to Longmont today after work to meet up with a buddy...

Tried to make it home on the same tank of gas I got 2 nights ago...

idiot light came on at 190.1, got to the gas station at 222.3.

Re: What's the furthest you've ever gone with the idiot light on?

40.2 miles, 2005 R6.. I was on 85 headed down town, and it started to rev funny, I got as much power and speed as I could, and then pulled over the right when I slowed to much. The engine died, and I cruised into the pump station.

    Can't beat that luck.

Re: What's the furthest you've ever gone with the idiot light on?

Best one I had was years back on the Sportster (3 gl. tank).
Just outside Eagle had to switch to reserve.
For those of you born after the Dark Ages, motorcycles used to have a thing called a petcock...
(and no, it's not a rooster that's housebroken or your "special purpose")
...and you would manually switch to reserve after running the main tank dry.

I knew there was a station in Dotsero so figured no problem.
But when I got there the station was closed.

So it was about 6 miles back to Gypsum or 14 miles on to Glenwood Springs.
Decided to risk it and went on to Glenwood.
(Belly down and drafting anything in front of me.)

Ran it bone dry and coasted it into the Amoco station in Glenwood.
Literally rolled to a stop at the first pump without even having to touch the brake.

About 30 miles (+ one stop) on a little over half a gallon.
Be assured that a walk through the ocean of most souls would scarcely get your feet wet.

Re: What's the furthest you've ever gone with the idiot light on?

Ran out of gas last week a few miles from home. The idiot light read 42.2 miles, but I hadn't been following my rule of keeping the revs under 5K very well.

Re: What's the furthest you've ever gone with the idiot light on?

I don't have an idiot light My reserve kicks on after 4.5gallons, leaving me with 1.8gal left in my 6.3 gallon tank, I always average 40+ no matter how hard I go on it, and 55mpg highway at 75mph.

This being said the furthest I've gone was on a road trip with a fuel stop where the gas station had closed so I had no choice to run it, but I went an additional 90 miles for a total of 325miles to the tank...filled up 6.2 gallons Risky

186 miles till I ran out of fuel within site of Green River, Ut.
I was having to much riding and forgot to fill up. To far between
fuel stops out there in the desert. A harley guy stopped and I
siphoned some out of his tank to make it into town.Nice guy.
Lessoned learned. Now I have a larger tank and don't have to worry
    about anything under 200.

08 vstrom 650. Idiot light comes on after 4 gallons, out of 6. I routinely get 54 mpg so I've run it out that 100 miles. Filled up one night at 5.893 gallons, 315 miles on the trip.
