    Obama by the Numbers

    This is interesting:

In 2004, Bush beat John Kerry by winning 62.04 million votes. In 2008, Obama won 62.443 million, a gain of only 400,000. In 2004, Kerry garnered 59.028 million votes; John McCain only got 55.386 million. That means this election saw 3.24 million fewer votes than four years ago. Far from being more energized, the nation appeared to be more apathetic.
    2004 - 121.068 million votes
    2008 - 117.829 million votes

One explanation I've heard is that conservative turnout was depressed. I think a lot of people on the right knew it wasn't going to be a good election for them.

I can see that for sure... but where's the record millions of Blacks, Hispanics, Independents, moderate Republicans, youth, etc. for Obama?!?! This was supposed to be an historic turnout for Dems, and they only snagged a few million more votes than Kerry?

    WTF

Hm, everything I heard pointed towards record turnout.

    Is there 100% reporting now?

If that's current, that's still more than 2mil below 2008 numbers (for the top 2 tickets). (Admittedly, I don't know 3rd party tallies from 2004). Maybe we can still hit/break it with remaining mail-ins, etc. to be counted... still, tying 2004 is far below anticipated turnout.

With our total voting age population over 231 million, it's embarrassing that more people don't vote!!!

    Agree with you 100% there.

The people that chose not to vote made up the largest single group in the election.
One vote might not seem to matter, but 110,000,000 "one votes" could have elected anyone in a landslide.
