    Pirates...

So I'm wondering about all the pirates over in Somalia... Do you think they're just trying to stop global warming?

But then again, if it's so warm right now because of global warming, I say they should be stopped!

    Re: Pirates...

It's an interesting thing. The tanker they hijacked was brand new about 5 months ago and cost $150M to build. The cargo (oil) at the current market value is worth about $100M and they figure the company that owns it will be happy to pay about $50M to get it all back. It's a pretty lucrative business. All you need is a few speed boats, a rocket launcher and a bull horn...

A number of companies are now sending their ships the long way around (around the cape of good hope) to avoid these extremely dangerous waters...

How can you be a pirate in a boat like this? Fisherman during the week, pirate on the weekends?

    Re: Pirates...

My personal thought is that if I owned a $150M oil tanker with $100M in cargo... what is another $20K to hire a couple of Blackwater "consultants" to bring some of their toys on board and protect my freakin' ship?!

The BBC has had some really decent articles about these guys and how they do what they do... It's not just one boat... it's upwards of 50 men on multiple boats with RPG's and the like. Once they take control of a ship, a small group stays on board and the rest return to land.

    Re: Pirates...

This has been going on for decades, centuries even.
The line "to the halls of Tripoli" in the Marine Corps Hymn is in reference the war against the Barbary Coast (North African) pirates in the 1800's.

There was also a really good Nova or Frontline PBS documentary about modern pirates a while back.
Modern shipping companies still pay ransom and tributes to the warloards and governments to keep their ships from being attacked.

I'm sure the US will drop a few well placed bombs on some key locations over this.
But it goes on all over the world and is pretty much considered the price of doing business.

I'd love to see the faces on those dipshits when an oil tanker opened up on them with a mini-gun.

The laws of necessity, of self- preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property, and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

Saudi tankers need to mount some 25mm chain guns. I figure 4 would give good coverage with moderate cutout (being if the "targets" get in too close).

or at least these babies will also do the trick

There's a reason it's the longest running service gun in history.

and after a discussion with the Officer about Bannana's, pockets and glad tidings to all he let me off with a warning

My response "I feel so much better knowing that you Officer Pennywise will be looking out for me."
