I think a DRZ400 is way too much bike for Linda to learn fundamental dual-sport skills…think CRF230. Check out a noob dirt school and you’ll see XR100’s.

Yeah, something in the 200/250 range would be ideal.
But for something Dana could ride and then hand down to her it's not too bad.
Linda has a couple years street riding under her belt now so a 400 should be manageable.
And she definitely won't outgrow it anytime soon.

She was not comfortable on an SV650, and a DRZ is going to be taller and feel more top heavy than any SV. I’m just sayin’ he should be prepared to sell the 400 and buy something else for her when the time comes.

It depends on what type of riding you plan on doing. To throw a 400 around on a single track trail all day is a lot of work. If you are hitting fire roads and dirt roads it would be perfect. Keep in mind that it is a 290lb. bike so it isn't as light as it feels if you get in trouble. I can't flat foot it at 5'9" but you can get a lower seat and if you need to you can lower the suspension. I just got used to it from my DR650 that I had in high school...either lean off one side or bounce back and fourth on my tip toes. It is an excellent dual purpose bike, it took me and a passenger up the canyon no problem and the next week I took rampart range road all the way from Woodland Park to Sedalia.

Here's the DRZ that I've been watching/wanting. If it weren't so far away.

Ummm nope. But I was not going to bother you about it.

Either it is still enroute, the wind blew the notice off my door to go to my apt complex office to pick it up, or something else....

I will check the complex office tomorrow.

    THANKS.

And I have some very dirt-bike knowledgeable relatives near Gainesville if you want someone to look at that one.

The laws of necessity, of self- preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property, and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

I got corrected on the thumpertalk forums....I guess it is a crime to call a DRZ 400 a DR 400. For some reason the Z is important. But either way it kicks ass.

Hey John, yeah, I looked at the 650. More than I need.. As is the KLR.

    All I need is a DRZ400.

Actually I was real close to getting the DRZ400. It's made for more terrain than even their 650.

In the end I'm going with the KLR650. Think I have a good price & it's made to haul the kitchen sink down the trail!!! And the 6.1 gallon tank is a BIG PLUS!!!!!!!!
