    Speaking of Rifles...

So I've got a little extra cash and I have been wanting a small rifle for a while. I figured since I'm in ROTC it would be good to go out and shoot every now and then with some buddies. This would just to go target shooting and what not (not hunting). I know very little about rifles other than how to fire, adjust, and clean an M-16, that's about it.

I'm not looking to spend a whole lot of money either.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You can pick up a Mossin Nagant (sp?) at Big 5 for less than $100 and the rounds aren't very expensive. It is a very simple bolt action rifle but it is still powerfull enough to bring down a deer if you get into hunting.

    There's no place like home............

    Two ways to go:
Figure out the caliber you want, then find the gun to fit it.
Keep your options pretty much open and buy the firearm that's the best deal.

Well I was looking at sky blue's post about the rifle she got, and it brought back my interest of shooting. I'd probably be fine with just a .22 as I shot them a bunch at day camp way back in the day and I'm not looking to really do any serious shooting.

.22's are the best for plinking away.

I have a remington that's going on 80+ years old (was my great grandfathers). I wouldn't give it up for the world.

werd... last time I went out I priced out a couple of my rifles at almost a buck a bullet. Forget that noise for killing paper and cans!

A buck a bullet?!?! Where you get your ammo, homey? I shoot .308 and 7.62x39 and have never paid over 38 cents/rnd.

I also usually buy at least 1,000 rounds at a time, though...

An SKS is a fun and fairly inexpensive one. I am not sure about now, but the rounds used to be dirt cheap if you buy them by the case at the gun shows.

Then the Ruger 10/22 or Marlin Model 60 are the only two semi-auto rifles you need to consider.

Even in bulk they've all gone up.
Gone are the days of .223 or 7.62 bulk @ 24cents a round.
(Probably still find them around 38 cents but now you have to buy 5,000 rounds in steel.)

I smell a CSC group buy this spring!

Can't remember the specific caliber, but the only place that had them in stock was Gander (I know, I know)... it was off season and they wanted something like 20 - 25 bucks for 20 rounds! ridiculous.

    That's why I stick to 12ga, 22, & 9mm when I go play.

Yup, my last bulk purchase was good ol' Wolf, which I have NEVER had a problem with. Used to be able to get 1,000 of 7.62x39 for $99. Sure do miss those days!!

Check out the gun nut forums and you'll find guys dumping their stock piles. Well, maybe not after the election, now...

I've never seen a good price at any of the local gun shops or hunting stores.

    +1
Wally World or K-Mart are still about the cheapest retail places.

I'm seriously gonna post up for a group buy soon.
I personally want brass so I can reload, especially the pistol and big bore rounds,
but would do wolf in .223 and 7.62

I'd be down for a group buy. I got a catalog for these guys yesterday http://shop.sportsmansguide.com/sear...=browse&k=.223 they have some pretty good looking deals on bulk that puts their .223 down between .30 to .37 for either cases of 500 or 1000

Well I blew out my rear tire going down 25 this afternoon so I'm not sure how much more of this spare cash I will have, but I do appreciate the responses. Chad, I'll still give you a call about you rifle.

I'm a junior right now so I'm about ready to pull my hair out but I'll be fine... I hope. I'd like active aviation but I'll probably have to go NG to get it. When did you commission?

    Re: Speaking of Rifles...

I commissioned in 1997, but went into the IRR for a year while i went to the police academy. I branched MP and its treated me pretty well (3 deployments in 10 years...2 to Iraq).
I'm AGR in the Colorado Army National Guard. So i get all the same benfits as AD, just alot less BS. If you are interested in the NG hit me up and ill give you the skinny on it.

Walmart carries 200 round value packs of Federal .223 hollowpoint for right around $80 with tax. $0.40 a round retail isn't too bad. Only problem is since the election they can't keep them in stock.

About a dozen firearms I have belong to a friend of mine and were left as collateral on a loan that he's now paid off.
Which drops my personal collection down to about 15.
