Re: Are you an AMA member?

I've been a member for 10+ years because they're supposed to protect our right to ride. I don't feel like they've done anything for me personally, but I'll continue being a member just to show support.

For my race license and soon for the towing coverage since Honda in their ever increasing unbrilliance decided to drop it from the HRCA membership package.

No. I really don't see the need to spend $ when I can write my congressman for free should the need to spank idiots from limiting horsepower, helmet laws, tariffs on foreign goods et. al.

Considering it for the roadside assistance/towing coverage, since AAA wants $298,231,323,120.00 annually for coverage, Honda Rider Club is dumping tow coverage, and my State Farm roadside only covers autos. At some point soon, just paying the damn tow-truck driver myself is going to be cheaper.

Same here. But what it this talk of towing?

I received my paperwork and pretty much just filed it away. Guess I should take the time to maybe go back and actually read it.

I've been a member for 6+ years - became a member before I was interested in racing... did it because they help protect our right to ride.

Re: Are you an AMA member?

Just wondering why there are millions of motorcyclists but only about 300,000 AMA members. We all know you must be an AMA member to compete in AMA sanctioned events, and I can understand how some of you hold disdain for being forced to join to compete. What I don’t understand is why so many street and off-road motorcyclists are not members of the very organization that protects their rights as motorcyclists.

Consider that powerful superbike you’re riding may not even be in existence if not for the efforts of the AMA. Way back in the early eighties, our friends at the Insurance Institute lobbied Congress for an outright ban on powerful supersport motorcycles, and they might have succeeded if not for the AMA. Have you ever been hurt in a non-competition motorcycle related crash? Some medical insurers are denying claims for motorcycle related injuries b/c it is a “high risk” activity, as they call it. The AMA is very close to, and will probably get passed this year, a federal law that will make this kind of health insurance discrimination illegal.

The AMA has lobbied for and passed state legislation in many states that increase the fines and/or jail time for motorists that kill or injure motorcyclists. The AMA is involved in and represents motorcyclists interests regarding the sound issue, HOV lane access, parking laws, off-road access (a very big issue), helmet laws, HP limits on supersport motorcycles, rider/motorist training, the new crash study, youth riding restrictions…just to name a few. Also, the slew of discounts members receive for just $39 per year…I just don’t get it.

Dingman and the Board cleaned house and sold off Pro Racing so they could concentrate on advocacy and the rights of Joe and Jane biker. These changes have been evident to me in the short time that they have been in effect…for the better. If you have issues with Pro Racing, as many do, send your complaints to DMG.

Sorry for the rant, but I just don’t understand why all of you are not AMA members. You can join online at http://www.ama-cycle.org/

Re: Are you an AMA member?

I first joined the AMA because I had to to race, but after learning about what they do I kept it up after quitting racing and have no intention of leaving. I think the biggest thing keeping membership down is lack of knowledge, even knowing the AMA exists. I didn't know about until I joined at the signup table.
