Can I build or buy a decent computer for $350-450

I am selling my current computer and I was hoping to upgrade. I don't know if I can buy or build a computer for that price. All I am looking for is a new CPU box. I have everything else like monitor, keyboard...

I just built my girlfriend a new computer for under $300 that had a 2.6ghz dual core processor, 4gb ram and a 500gb hard drive

Dave, check out some of the sale computers at Microcenter.com. If you're not looking for cutting edge hardware, they have some real deals on refurbed stuff. Or, talk to Dana.

I actually have a rig that I am selling but it is $500 so a bit higher than you want to pay.

    Dual 2.6GB processors (Hyperthreaded)

2 15k RPM SCSI drives in RAID 0

    2GB RAM

XP, Vista, or LINUX installed with Office 2003 Pro

Re: Can I build or buy a decent computer for $350-450

I bought a new gateway at Best Buy for $500

    2.6ghz dual core
    4 gb RAM
    640 gb HD
    Vista Premium

Not a bad deal and more than does what I want it to do.

+1 on Microcenter though, definitely good deals to be had. Check out their website for their most recent ad.

Re: Can I build or buy a decent computer for $350-450

Cool I will check those out. Talk to Dana though? Jim thems fightin werds. LOL J/K

Now for the major problem... I think you know what it is too. How do I get all the "old" information off the old computer without wiping out all the stuff I want leave.

My father in law is buying the computer. He said I could leave the porn on there to save time but I don't think he needs to see most of what I got on here. Lol

Sounds like Best Buy have Dana out priced, or is your computer a "limited" edition?

Nope, the hard drives alone in my system cost more than $500

Something like that sounds good. But is that a great system? I want the best for the money without missing something like PCIe, raid, HD...

    +1 for newegg.com

if you're just talking about the box (not the monitor, keyboard, speakers, etc) $350 is not hard to do now days. it will be far from top of the line but if you are just wanting a decent, solid PC, 350 to 450 will get you one.

And don't go just to newegg. I got better deals from Amazon and TigerDirect on two thirds of the computer I built back in October. If you're going to build, check the prices at the different places.

Backup all data first just in case. Then assuming its XP use the file and settings transfer wizard. Once you think you have everything you need log in as a different user (one thats administrator) and make a fresh account for your father in law and then delete the user you used. (This assumes all your "porn" was in my documents/ my movies my pics etc....)

Thats the easiest way if you trust the person your giving the computer, otherwise I normally DoD wipe the drive and fresh reinstall for selling.

Also if building isnt your thing hit up Dell Outlet online for the scratch and dent and refurb stuff.

If you purchase a new Vista system, it will come with pre-packaged data migration software. M$ bought out Aloha Bob a while back and integrated the code into Vista.

Also a tip...if you are going to store data that you don't want others to see...http://www.truecrypt.org/

Re: Can I build or buy a decent computer for $350-450

Thanks for the tips. I will have to look at transferring the data to the new computer or retreiving it later. But I do want to delete the worst stuff and leave the nice old misionary porn on here.

I found out that it will be $350 tops. I don't have a problem building my own but I would like a full~ upgrade from the stuff I have now.

I would second the Dell Outlet comment. Inexpensive computers for those too lazy (like me) to build their own.
