It looks like there are plenty of back protectors with chest protection as well. Is this common for racers as well? It would make sense, but I wonder why it wouldn't be req'd for tracks?

most racers only wear a back protector. its not as much as protection for an impact as it is for protecting your spine if you are sliding down the asphalt on your back. you can reach a point where you will burn right through your leathers.

    Ouch!

That's interesting. You're right, it doesn't seem like the chest would be as much of an impact zone on a sportbike as it would dirt. I had just seen some of the motogp guys use a chest protector (a slip in version) and thought it was "standard" for everybody that was uber fast on the track.

Nope, that sure as hell isn't me. I hoping to shift into 3rd gear on the straight at Pueblo this year. You know, if I can get the courage

    Re: back protector?

The more protection the better when you are doing 200mph. Thats why you see MotoGP guys with chest protectors. It's basically been answered, but the foam back piece in some suits is NOT considered a back protector when it come to Pueblo or HPR. You don't need one for IMI. And I hope you're joking about getting into 3rd at Pueblo on the straight....
