i did a 1000 mile day once in about 13 hours 14 minutes (if i recall correctly) but i think i did violate the speed limit 1 time (soon after i started & went back below it right before i finished ). about 450 was interstate the rest was twisties... it was a good day to ride.

The TL will do 160mph easy, been there more than once. The lower elavation makes a difference. You sure that Virago won't do it?

Did a little over 1100 miles in 16 hours when my grand mother died in a car accident back in 2000 and I had to make haste to San Diego to help my dad out...rode my Honda Nighthawk...talk about a sore arse...

Re: 1,000 miles in one day

    my 2 cents.....

    1. you shouldn't have to speed but you've got to be consistent.

    2. map and verify your fuel/relief stops a conservative distance apart
(my average spread has been 170 miles)

    3. record keeping is essential (see iba site for requirements and tips)

    4. make your stops systematic with everything being done the same way every stop (every fuel stop with alternating bathroom relief and snack/drink intake) see the iba site for more tips ......

honestly, 1500/24 isn't that bad..... but then again, i haven't done my back-to-back 1500s yet either. long-dist endurance can be addicting!

Thanks for the tips Henry. I'm now thinking about the 1,500/36 hours while I'm at it.

a note aside.... i did my first 1k to lincoln, nebraska and back. i went there to fit some high performance lighting (Saeng/TA).

i believe your first documented ride must be a 1k or some sanction ride like the 1088 or such; again the iba site offers a wealth of insight on this stuff. i've got the mapping software and an interstate service center computer to plan your trip.

let me or one of the other local iba members do the witness thing.

i know that bozeman, montana and back is 1505. when me and my dad did out 1500 that was our turn around. we got gas and turned back. it was a nice town... all 5 minutes we were there.

as for witnesses i like cops. they are easy here in the springs (since military cops work, too). the gates to the AF Academy are right off the interstate.

    swademaster,

You plannin on doing this ride on a weekend? If so, I'd ride up to Denver to witness the start and finish, if ya need someone to sign your paperwork. Might even tag along for awhile if that's ok.

Yep, it will be on a weekend. You would be more than welcome to tag along as far as you want, as is anybody else that wants to. The days that I am looking to do this are either Saturday, April 30th or Saturday, May 7th. I have also been considering the idea of doing the 1,500/ 36 hour ride.

Re: 1,000 miles in one day

Someone I've ridden with before just pulled off a 1000 mile journey in 24 hours (XX Blackbird). He did it going to SW Colorado and riding over nine passes, including several packed with snow .

    His brief report is here:

Better than the 1000 mile out and back is the Utah 1088 Rally. I've never felt more challenged on a bike mentally and physically.
Not a shred of evidence exists in favor of the idea that life is serious.

Those weekends sound good to me. Hey, have you picked out a final route yet? Or an approximate destination for a turnaround point?

I'm working on my Nat Park Ironbutt ride and still need to bag a few states.

Microsoft Streets & Trips lists that route as 1015.4. Good to go! The IBA will use the actual street address of the starting gas station as the official starting pont (assuming you're still gonna get certified). So, FWIW, don't measure from your home address. They don't really care where you live, just where you got your start receipt.

So, you've decided on the 1000/24 instead of the 1500/36. IMHO, good choice. The 1500 in 36 is actually just as easy from a "ride" standpoint, but the logistics of metering your sleeping habits can get kinda dicey.

I'll try to work out a route that fits with your's so I can tag along for a good part of the ride. I'm looking for an official receipt location in Council Bluffs, IA....

    Cheers,

I'm open for suggestions if you want to ride along. My route isn't set in stone and could be changed. We could make a run into Counciltuky, not too much futher.

I will probably try to meet up with my Dad and Uncle near Grand Island, NE and then my brother in Omaha.

Let me know what you want to do. As long as I get the engine back from TK and the bike running good by the first part of April I will be ready to go.

Looks good to me! Dang, I wasn't going to try for the 1500/36 on this ride but now you got me wondering... I may try to work out a loop that has 95% of the same general route with a minor variation here or there. Will get back to ya shortly.

Re: 1,000 miles in one day

    Something else to consider...

To "prove" your route, you need a computer generated receipt (gas pump, atm, etc.) at every major turning point of the route. I wonder if Pickston has such a thing or if it is just a dot on the map. If Clarks does not have one either, we may want to make sure to come down thru Norfolk or Columbus, NE, to get a receipt before stopping in Clarks.

Didn't you want to visit your parents in Wahoo?

Another option "could" be - Denver to Lusk, WY, to Rapid City, SD, to Sioux Falls then South to Council Bluffs and either Wahoo or Clarks, NE for the night. Shoot straight back to Denver on Sunday and end right at about 1500 miles. We could start from a gas station on the south side of Denver to make sure the total distance is over 1500. Then, basically, the only turning points we would need to document are Rapid City, Sioux Falls and Council Bluffs. If I can swing by Jewel Cave, SD, between Newcastle, WY, and Custer, SD, I'll be able to get my SD National Park Stamp. I don't think we would get to Council Bluffs in time on Saturday for me to get a stamp there, but I'll call and check their hours. Actually, another option for me is Onawa, IA, and the Lewis and Clark State Park visitor center. I gotta call them too.

I should be able to find someone to sign us out on the south side of Denver. I got a friend that lives right next to Chatfield Reservoir. Maybe we could start from the gas station at Kipling and C-470 (or throw another small loop in somewhere along the overall route). It's just gotta be "documentable" (is that a word?). Cheers!

Re: 1,000 miles in one day

    Ok, here's a better one...

Day 1 - 1051 miles (Wahoo) or 1118 miles (Clarks)
Northglen to Lusk, WY, Jewel Cave National Park and Rapid City, SD - 407 miles
Rapid City, SD to Pipestone National Monument, MN - 397 miles
Pipestone, MN to Wahoo (247 miles) or Clarks (314 miles)

    Day 2 - 505 (Wahoo) or 432 (Clarks)
    Interstate back to Denver

Either night stop gives us about 1550 miles and the turning corners are obvious. I'm also partial to this route because I can get both SD and MN checked off.

Honestly, I'm game for whatever. It's all good!

Yes, we can get a receipt in Clarks. It may be a little shit hole town, but there is a gas station.

Another idea would be to make it into Omaha on the first day at 1,000 miles. My brother lives in Omaha so we could stay there. The second day we could go into Council Bluffs before heading back to Denver. That way you could get SD, MN, and IA all in one trip.
