    Carb issues or bad shop?

Hello everyone, I'm new here but wanted to get some feedback from someone who's maybe run into this issue also. I've got an old Honda CBR600-Hurricane. ran fine all last year until about the end of the summer. Then when it gets hot it bogs out in accelerating conditions. Once I get it to about 3k rpm it evens out and is okay. I took it to TFOG upon the recommendation of someone I knew who rides a much newer bike. First they said it was the jets, probably haven't been swapped out for high altitude (since I had no idea where the bike came from before the guy I bought it from). I made an appt and had the jets swapped out with a stage two kit. At first when I got it back I was happy as it seemed to solve the problem. That only lasted about a week until it got a little warmer out and the bike started bogging out when hot again. I called TFOG and let'm know what was going on. They said bring it back in. I did and they leaned out the mixture. I was halfway home when the bike started running so crappy (more of this bogging under acceleration, felt like it was vapor locking honestly) that I turned around and took the bike back to TFOG. they test rode it and said that they'd not experienced the issue until then (okay, but it's been in there for a month already). I left it with them again. I'd call a couple times a week and was told initially that they thought it was a vapor lock issue, and they'd tried a myriad of insulation tricks to see if that would help. Nothing did. So they tore into the carbs again and upon closer inspection they found that the "needle jets" were worn out on a couple of the carbs and that what was causing the erratic nature of the problem. They said that those parts weren't intended to be replaced so they were going to have to get another set of carbs and make one good from two. (gasp... long story but therein is my frustration) Here's where I'm stuck... I'm frustrated with the fact that the bike's been in the shop now for 9 of 10 weeks. I would like to think that the shop's being straight and it's just been a m.f.r of a problem. So one question is, has anyone had anything like this happen to their carborated bikes? Second: has anyone had good or bad experiences w/TFOG? Third: should this have been something that was discovered when they did the jet job? All info is appreciated at this point!

PS... I'm going insane w/o my bike!

Alot of people dont work on older bikes for specific reasons, this being one of them. Cant say they missed anything in the first place, sometimes thats how it works. Old carbs wear out in odd ways and parts are hard to come by. Which takes time, I think they are probably doing the best they can.

TFOG has a great reputation on this site and Jim is a stand up guy. I've been a faithful customer of TFOG for quite a few years now and I, and many other people, trust Jim. I can't comment on what's going on with your bike, but I can say without a doubt that they aren't screwing you.

Intermittent problems are a pain in the ass, as well as pretty much any carb work, and I've experienced my fair share of problems and been without my bike for far too long on occasion. They'll get it straightened out for you, I'm sure.

I've had good experience with TFOG, but, like with any shop, you'll hear mixed reviews but I think largely positive. I may be shooting you a PM in the coming months as I'm picking up a hurricane myself! If you've got info sites or communities you'd recommend feel free to send 'em my way! /thread jack

good luck with your carbs, I know that Jim's not out to screw ya, so hopefully that'll make you rest a little easier

Thanks for the feed back everyone! I've wanted to believe everything Jim's said but you know how it is when you're getting frustrated! It's good to hear that the shop's as reputable as I was initially led to think.
I know how intermittent probs can suck so I've been trying to be as patient as possible!

Carb issues can be hard to diagnose. You say they are going to cobble together some carbs for you. That is going above and beyond, in my opinion. Sounds like you took it to the right place.

Jim's a top notch mechanic and better than top notch as a person. I know it's frustrating, but I can guarantee things wouldn't be any better if you had taken it elsewhere.

Totally agree. I've not heard a bad thing about Jim in the short time I've been around, and from what you're saying, that shop is taking a LOT more time and effort to fix the bike than I'm sure you're paying for. I know how frustrating it is to not have your ride, but where would you be without TFOG?

Worn jet tubes will def cause your bike to run rich. Give Factory Pro a call and ask if they have "emulsion tubes" for your bike.
