Call your Representatives NOW! Omnibus Public Lands Bill to be Voted on Tomorrow!

Edit: This is urgent again! See Update in post #6.

Just got this in an email from the AMA - I know it pertains more to our off-road brethren, but I think there's enough of us here that play in the dirt that we can lend them a hand in this time of need:

    AMA National Action Alert!
Omnibus Public Lands Bill to be Voted on Tomorrow!
    Call your Representatives NOW!

The American Motorcyclist Association has been asking everyone to contact their Representatives to vote "No" on S. 22, the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009. After tracking the legislation and working with members of congress and their staff, we have been alerted that the legislation is set for a vote tomorrow, March 11th.

    S. 22 will be coming up on the suspension calendar, meaning it needs more than 144 Congressman to vote "No" to be defeated. Now is when every contact counts.

With such a short time frame for action, the best way to tell your Representative to vote "No" on S. 22 is to call. Click here to get the phone number for your member of congress. Enter your zip code in the "Find Your Officials" box and click on the name of your Representative.

You can also find more information on the bill and some good reasons to help persuade your Congressman to vote "No" by clicking here.

Today is the day to act to help keep 2.1 million acres of public land from being designated as Wilderness. Please call your Representatives and tell everyone you can to do the same.

Tomorrow, every member of congress must know to vote "No" on S. 22!

Do not put off living the life you dream of. Next year may never come. If we are always waiting for something to change...
Retirement, the kids to leave home, the weather or the economy, that's not living. That's waiting!
Waiting will only leaves us with unrealized dreams and empty wishes.

"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self- preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation. To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property, and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

Omnibus Public Land Legislation is Back! Contact Your Congress Members Today! http://www.arra-access.com/campaign/advocacy_omnibusleg2

Well our victory last week was short lived as the Omnibus Public Land Management Act that would ban OHV access to over two million acres of public lands is back in the Senate. The legislation has been attached to H.R. 146, the Revolutionary War and War of 1812 Battlefield Protection Act and could be voted on for passage as early as today!

We need to continue to have our voices heard regarding our opposition to this legislation. We need to also let our Senators know that using procedural tactics such as attaching broad and burdensome legislation to an uncontroversial bill is unacceptable.

Re: Call your Representatives NOW! Omnibus Public Lands Bill to be Voted on Tomorrow!

Got this response today from my message the other week. I can't say that I'm sure what to make of it as he does not come out and say that he wants to protect our rights to be on the land, more like he just doesn't agree with the current terms:

    From: Congressman Michael Coffman <CO06MCIMA@mail.house.gov>

Thank you for contacting me regarding Senate Bill 22, commonly referred to as the Omnibus Public Lands Management Act. As a Westerner and outdoor recreationist I know the value of our nation's public lands. It is because I value our public lands that I am concerned about the effects of this legislation.

The Omnibus Public Lands Management Act is a 1,300 page bill that contains more than 160 separate pieces of legislation, many of them controversial. Some of the provisions in S.22 would:
o Impose federal jurisdiction over water in more than one thousand miles of river
o Limit recreation opportunities on over 2 million acres of public land
o Expand mandatory government spending by $915 million
o Stifle efforts to achieve American energy independence

The process behind the compilation of this legislation is also troubling. Some of the bills included in this package have never been subject to a hearing in the House of Representatives. As a newly elected member of the House who serves on the Natural Resources Committee I find this highly objectionable. If I were to support S.22 without properly vetting it through the regular legislative process, I would be derelict in my duty to my constituents. I believe the people of Colorado's 6th Congressional District elected me to be a voice for them in Washington, not a rubber stamp. It is unfortunate that the legislative process is being circumvented because there are some valid provisions in this package. However, I cannot support them at the cost of a massive expansion of federal control over land and water in the West.

The responsible management of our public lands is of the utmost importance to me. As a general rule I believe we should manage them according to a multiple use model, balancing conservation with recreation and responsible resource utilization.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact me. Please visit my website at www.coffman.house.gov if you would like more information on legislation that I am sponsoring, press releases, and my stance on other issues that are important to you.

    Sincerely,

    Michael Coffman
    Member of Congress

Yeah that's pretty much what I got out of it..He doesn't care to much about protecting our right to be on the land. But it is good to see that the messages are getting through to these elected officials.
    When in doubt...Pull it out.
