    Chain Lube?

I am currently using chain wax for chain lube, but it seems that it collects a lot of grit/dirt even on a 1 hour ride (that is not good for the O-rings). I am curious to find out what some peoples opinions of using WD-40 as a chain cleaner and lube. I have found some articles on using WD-40 as a chain lube and there seems to be a lot of people swearing by it. But there is also a lot of people that will never use it.

What type of chain lube are you using that won't fling off?
How often do you clean your chain?
Would you use WD-40 as a chain cleaner/lube?
What is the secret to keeping the chain sparkeling clean and yet well lubed at the same time?

Thanks in advance for those that respond!

    Re: Chain Lube?

    I use a 2 chemical combination

    1) Kerosene - This is an excellent solvent and chain cleaner that will not damage o rings in o-ring chains.

    2) Honda HP chain lube -

    http://www.ronayers.com/catalogs/pu/...d=98&type=1257

this is an excellent lube that seems to use alcohol as a carrier for a teflon based lube. After the product is sprayed on the alcohol transports the teflon to the necessary parts and evaporates, leaving nothing for dirt to stick to. I've tried a LARGE number of combinations and this by far works best for me.

There is a NEW honda chain lube out there, that I don't think is as good. Try to get the red can stuff if you can find it.

I use WD40 to clean and a "grunge brush" to get the dirt out. Then just wipe it down with a rag.

The chain lube I like the best is Honda HP-4 or Fuch's Silkolene Pro Chain

    Re: Chain Lube?

    I use WD40 as a cleaner, never a lubricant.

I lube my chain with Maxima Chain Wax and I've never had a problem with it flinging off.

    Re: Chain Lube?

I only use WD-40 on trips as it's easier to carry than kerosene and only for cleaning the chain. At home it's kerosene.

I also use the Minwax chain wax. No problems with extra crud on the chain but I do clean it once a month or so. It does cause the o-rings in the hydraulic clutch to fail sooner though (sooner being 60,000 miles or so).

Thanks everyone for your advice! Going to have to try the Honda lube and the Dupont lube.

    Re: Chain Lube?

I used to use a combo of Kerosene + lube (numerous type, dry and wet).
I've since switched to http://aerospacelubricants.thomasnet...hain-lubricant . Repackaged and available from Lowes as chain lube, found in the garage door area. I've read claims that this product will extend chain life. So far so good but final outcome is to be determined since I only have 5k on my new final drive setup (steel sprockets and x-ring chain).

    I've found:

    Pro's:
Cean and lube with one product
NO MORE CLEAN UP with kerosene
chain stays cleaner than with wax and typical petrol base lubes
fling off cleans up really easy with a dry rag (no more solvent or wax)
Gritty stuff doesn't appear to stick to chain.

    Cons:
flings off easily - also a pro because when the lube comes off it brings dirt with it!

    Re: Chain Lube?

My Buell is an undesirable belt drive that requires no adjustment or cleaning and lubrication, it weighs half as much as a 520 with alum. sprockets. It sucks!
Everything I have with an O-ring just gets cleaned periodically and sprayed with bel-ray something, or chain wax just to condition o rings and keep metal from rusting. The lube is on the inside!

    Re: Chain Lube?

I was cleaning the garage up yesterday and drained my kersone heater. I put it in an old juice bottle (48oz...maybe). Usually kerone comes in Gallon containers.
If anyone wants it for free give me a push. Must pickup in SE Aurora/Centennial area.
