    94 Nissan Pathfinder help

Ive got a 94 nissan pathfinder that im tinkering around with. did a full belt change yesterday along with a battery and fan clutch. well when i got it all put back together it was idling just fine. went to do a little test drive and now its just putzing along. really chopping and jumpy under 2500 rpm. will idle but very rough. im guessing i need to adjust the timing

here is my problem. i have no idea on this particular vehicle how to adjust the timing. all i know is how to loosen the screw on the distributor cap and move that back and forth but thats not enough. i have had NO luck looking online. does anyone know how to do this and can possibly come by and lend a hand? will cover ur time!

a timing light would help... not turning it by hand. it has a scew to adjust timing? or could you have moved the idle?

also did it run fine before the "tune up"? did you loosen a vacuum line somewere that you might have overlooked?

Or the intake. If the intake or throttle body(?) is loose.

id lean more towards a vacuum line off the intake. if it was loose it woulnt start back up imo. if it has a maf, it run terrible. if its got a map then itd just get dirt in your intake... thatd be bad.
keep us posted on your troubleshooting eh.

Was running fine other than the fan clutch. The engine might have gotten turned by hand a little. Would that screw it up? Ill dbl check all the hoses and lines.

Did you do just a serpentine belt replacement or timing belt??

Easy way to check for vacuum leaks is to spray carb. cleaner at various random locations where some of the hoses are that you might have disconnected. If the engine revs differently when you spray it, then you have found the location of a leak.

    spray on sprayas

whats a fan clutch? is it a centrifigal (sp? ) hub the fan blades sit on? bc just changing a belt shouldnt have the vehicle running erratically. check vacuum lines coming into and out of the area you were working.

timing belt only has about 5k on it. located near constitution and peterson.

the fan clutch controls how fast the fan spins. when the engine is at 4000rpm it keeps the fan from spining that quick to keep noise down. its sort of like a home thermostat. when it gets to a certain temp it kicks the heater one. same with this.

matt. im gonna be in huge debt to ya man. i need to get all these parts together and have ya come over and wrench for a little bit. start making a list! haha

    Re: 94 Nissan Pathfinder help

checked the new belt, its multi directional.

checked all the hoses i the engine bay(really not that many) and they are all where they are suppose to be with no cracks or anything.

something i noticed is that today when i first started it, it sounded a little better and idled a bit then started to die again. it sat for about 2 months and hasnt had new gas in 3. what im wondering if its possible that the fuel pump is clogged or the injectors from bad gas? above 1700 rpm it sounds perfect but it just wont idle or drive under 2000rpm. any ideas?

Fuel filters are cheap, start there, swap the plugs and wires. Check the cap and rotor to make sure its good. Then a full tank of high test. Air filters, as well as the entire intake system for leaks. Someone mentioned a MAF and that kinda stuff throws thosde systems for a loop.

the fuel filter is a pain to get to but atleast i can see it. will start there and work my way towards the engine. just dumped a good fuel system cleaner into it so we will see if that helps a little.

cap and rotor look brand spanking new and i can see its getting even contact. air filter clean as well. will look at the plugs soon.

    thanks guys

    Question
my nissan pathfinder was running fine...and then it started sounding like an ak47 out the exhaust...i stopped immediatealy and then when i tried to start is back, it wouldn't start....it would try to and sound like a gun going of out the muffler....what is it?

    Answer

It sounds like the timing belt has jumpped a couple of teeth. Take the inspection covers off the cam belts and look at the timing marks. You might ahve to roll the engine over to top dead center if it is not close. I would recommend a Nissan timing belt, tensioner pulley and water pump since you have it apart.

    If this doesn't work:

Did you tighten the cables on the battery enough? Did you do anything with the spark plugs?

I had to change the cables on of my vehicles due to the car not running properly, not starting, or it would die while driving. Once I changed the cables - ran fine.

I changed the spark plugs on a previous vehicle (long time ago), was running fine then all of a sudden it began running really rough. I pulled all of the spark plugs out and found that one had cracked when I dropped it. Bought a new one -replaced it - worked fine. Good Luck!

    Re: 94 Nissan Pathfinder help

I did replace the battery and It had some acid erosion on it. I may try scuffing it up or trying a contact gel. I don't think it would be the timing because once I rev it up it runs perfect and sounds great. I didn't mess with any plugs or wires and the wires are fairly new to begin with. Ill work on the fuel system part of it and the battery cable. Thanks for that info honey.

Use a metal brush or pour some coke on the cables (just make sure you don't get any of the coke on the battery to clean up the erosion. You're welcome.
