    hwy 550 (million dollar highway)

Be careful riding from durango over to Montrose area, CDOT has been doing some chip seal work and its still a little scary in places. Biggest areas are on the durango side of coal bank pass, and past Ouray.....the middle (north side of coal bank all the way to Ouray) is saweet, with the exception of the qtips in the cruise america rvs...nothing new for this time of year.....Be safe and have fun

Well fortunately the best section from Coal Bank to Ouray is still in great shape.

That's known as Molas Pass. Red Mountain sucks --- cept for the scenery. Too many tourists and Bag-o-Winos . Durango to Coal Bank = State Trooper hunting ground . I agree with you --- from the top of Coal Bank to the top of Molas is the best section of that road.

Re: hwy 550 (million dollar highway)

A senior citizen drove his brand new red Corvette convertible out of the Purfoy dealership.
Taking off down the road, he floored it to 80 mph, enjoying the wind
blowing through what little hair he had left.
'Amazing,' he thought as he flew down I-25, pushing the pedal even more.
Looking in his rear view mirror,
he saw a state trooper behind him, lights flashing and siren blaring.
He floored it to 100 mph, then 110, then 120. Suddenly he thought, "What am I
doing? I'm too old for this," and pulled over to await the trooper's arrival.
Pulling in behind him, the trooper walked up to the Corvette,
looked at his watch and said, "Sir, my shift ends in 15 minutes.
Today is Friday the 13th. If you can give me a good reason for speeding that I've never heard before, I'll let you go."

    The old gentleman paused.
Then said, "Several years ago, my wife ran off with a State Trooper. I thought
    you were bringing her back!!!!"

"'Have a good day, sir,"' replied the trooper.

Actually the sweepers and tight stuff from Coal Bank to Silverton, and from Silverton up towards Red Mtn Pass are pretty good too when you have a clear road like we did.

U gotta hit it before 9am and after 5 or 6pm to have a fairly clear road....i would choose the early time though cause the deer are out close to the top of Molas in the late afternoon.
