    Ninja 650R frame cracks

So in years past the Ninja 650's have had problems with the right upper engine mount cracking where it is welded to the frame. Kawi is aware of the problem and yada yada... I'm trying to find out if the issue has actually been resolved before I go wrenching on the bike too much. I read in one place that the '07 and later models "appear" to have been modified to correct for the issue, but most of the people with the cracks seem to be on the '07 models. Does anybody know if this issue has been resolved for the '08 models??? I'm still trying to hunt down the info, but figured I'd check here in case someone already knows....

And Kawi will not correct a cracked frame under warranty?

Check to see if there is anything on the TSB board? Technical Service Bulletin. Not sure if they post bike stuff there tho. I just use it for cars.

    Re: Ninja 650R frame cracks

I've heard mixed responses to that. They initially blamed it on aftermarket sliders - in which case they said it voided the warranty. Then they found some of the European bikes with the OEM sliders were doing the same. Not too long after, a few bikes popped up here and there with the cracks and no sliders at all. I'm still wading through all of the info to try to find out how exactly they handled it after the initial group.

Mine is not cracked at this point (that I can tell at least, as I don't have a mirror here to be able to look on the other side) but I still can't confirm that the problem has been fixed for my '08 - and I'm about to install my non-OEM sliders.

Hit Kawiforums & look for your specific model & year, they've probby got a forum for ya there and I'm sure that's addressed. You can always take it to a Kawi dealer (maybe even TFOG) & have them inspect the mounts to see if there's the beginnings of any cracking. Kawi likes to have pretty strong & overwhelming evidence before they issue a recall, especially for a recall/replacement of something that magnitude. Hell the head cover gasket recall on the '07 zx-6R's took 'em three different part numbers and a year & a half to figure out...

Chris - that's one of the forums I've been looking at and from what I can tell, they did a minor body change mid '07 so I should be good. A call to my dealer said I should be good to go as well.

I'm going to go ahead and install the sliders and if I get a crack, then I'll deal with it at time. Most people that had the crack are reporting that they are definitely ride-able, but just need fixed sooner than later so it doesn't spread. (Aside from the fact that a frame just isn't supposed to crack maybe? lol)

Jess no the kawi Forums suck. However the best bet is get on Riderforums.com . Best forum for the 650. BRP (Blue Rigde Performance) on there races the 650s and does lot of after market sales. They are the ones I bought my 2nd motor from them.

Other then that I have taken my motor out and that mount a few times and havnt had any creaks.

If you want to know for sure if they are doing anything for your model bike, you either, A. Call a local dealership and have them run your V.I.N. for recalls or T.S.B.'s or call Kawi directly. You will find this to be a easy process. If you are not covered or are out of warranty and you run into this issue let us know. We perform the best metal fabrication work/repair in the area.
