    Ammo question

The .45 had been in storage for a few years until last weekend. A friend got himself a 9mm, so we went out shooting. Now I am out of ammo. Where do you guys buy your ammo these days?

    I was looking at Cabellas:

For target shooting, is there any reason to get the FMJ rounds over the LRN rounds? Is $114 a good price for 300 rounds?

    Re: Ammo question

LRN will obviously foul your barrel faster since it doesn't have a jacket. Seems a pretty good price though. Some places have it at nearly a buck a round.

Ultramax is good for worm killing. I got 1500 rnds of 9mm and .45 Ultramax from Cabelas. They're reloads.

How fast will LRN foul a barrel? I have always thoroughly cleaned my gun after a days shooting.

Also, what exactly happens when a barrel is fouled? Forgive the noob question, but like I said I always keep mine clean.

/shrug your results may vary. The only non-jacketed round I've ever fired was .22LR. .45 are practically smoothbore cannons anyway so I doubt you would experience much degradation in performance. For me though, an extra $50 is worth it to go with FMJ. My opinion of course.

Probably a PM to Jeff (Sortarician) might give you better answers. He's been shooting .45ACP a lot longer then I have.

Think of the FMJ as a protective coating. Copper also can foul the barrel. Lead just does it easier and usually faster.

Lead is softer so when the round goes through the barrel, it leaves more lead deposits along the barrel. If the lead is too soft (cheap), or if the rounds are too hot, it will foul fast. The more consecutive lead rounds you send through, the greater the build up.

Found a good read for you regarding barrel fouling. http://www.riflebarrels.com/articles...el_fouling.htm

    Re: Ammo question

If you feel like scrubbing your barrel for an entire movie afterwards, using the lrn is fine. I'll spend the money, especially if it's a revolver. You can get some stuff to make it clean up faster but it's not worth the time to me.

    Re: Ammo question

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I'll go with the FMJ. Last time I cleaned it it felt like about 10 min cleaning the barrel and that was with FMJ rounds. Why would a revolver take longer to clean? (My gun's not a revolver, it's a Sig 220.)
