DECKERS, Colo.
A section of Colorado 67 is closed five miles south of Deckers after heavy rains unleashed a mud slide.
State highway crews are clearing mud and debris that packed the highway and culverts Tuesday night. The slide also forced water from the creek onto the road, deteriorating parts of the highway about 60 miles southwest of Denver.
Crews will have to repair the shoulders and roads once the mud is cleared and the creek returns to its normal course.
The Colorado Department of Transportation hoped to reopen the highway Wednesday night.

Hwy 67 Back Open After Mudslide Shuts It Down

DECKERS - State Highway 67 is back open after massive mudslides shut it down Tuesday night. "It was just so noisy all the water and the rain, we couldn't even hear ourselves talk," said mudslide witness and area resident Bob Gebur.
Gebur lives along Hwy 67. He said it started Tuesday night with a hailstorm. "We looked over the hill and I said, we're going to get slammed again," said Gebur. And they did. Gebur says they got 5 to 6 inches of rain in just a few hours. "It was on both sides of the house, these little creeks, little ravines were just flowing like mad rivers, said Gebur.
Mud and debris came down on Hwy 67, 5 miles south of Deckers, completely closing the highway. The sheer size of the mudslide diverted water from the creek, over the highway and other county roads. But Gebur says overall, it could have been worse. "At least the road is still drivable. The last big storm through here it just totally wiped out the road," said Gebur.
The YMCA camp in Deckers also had a close call. A wall in the kitchen washed out. All of the campers are fine, but it will be about a week before the kitchen is operable.
