Sounds like someone needs a friend in the pits.
I wouldn't think that a cell phones GPS is going to be accurate enough to be of any use. I'm pretty sure even good GPS can still be off by a few meters and, I would think, that would mess up the times it gives you, making it unreliable.
Maybe you could get a small lap timer and rig it to your left bar so you can hit the lap button with your thumb?

There's an app that I found for Windows mobile that was accurate to within ~.3 sec
