    $300 for a $12 part...ouch.

Never done it myself, but it doesn't sound too complicated, just a little time consuming since you've gotta pull & drain the forks (right? )

With labor, $300 sounds right. It is a job you can do yourself and save the $85 an hour. You just need time, tools, and common sense. Give it a try.

ummm... front stand, new fork seals, fork oil, and a couple of tools. pretty simple process, depending on what type of bike.

I would contact Rybo on the board. I've had him do quite a bit of work on my bike. He's good and reasonably priced!

I was under the impression that the tools required for this service were the real kick in the pants.

The most expensive tool is the seal driver. Usually around $75 or so.

Actually it is a good investment if you need to replace fork seals often because seals only run about $20. If you consider everytime you would need to pay $ for a shop to do it, it can pay itself off very quickly. Also to the OP, I assume the $300 you were quoted is if you brought the whole bike to them to replace the seals. If you take off the forks yourself and bring them in, usually the rate is around $150 or so IIRC.

    Re: fork seals

Indeed Elden. I was considering purchasing one but had heard that the particular tools were rather expensive. I often buy certain tools as a "what-if" since I prefer doing my own work for the most part. $75 doesn't break the bank, though.

You use a split piece of PVC for a seal driver.

I've only done the job once, and that was on a '82 kz750 Spectre. Wasn't bad though, just get the service manual and leave yourself a couple of hours just in case. It's also a great time to make any adjustments.
