And now, the exciting conclussion.. (stolen bike recovered

So you may remember, last summer my R1 was stolen.

This morning I got a call from a Springs detective that the police in Charlotte, NC had recovered the bike back on 7/18/09 and its been sitting in a tow impound. The detective gave me the number for the tow company who in turned gave me information for the police -- they arrested a guy named Antwone Johnson on the bike and I'm waiting to hear back from their detective.

The tow guy said the bike is in piece and they had grinded off the vin numbers except for the one stampted into the engine block They also had added a bunch of stickers and decails

I was able to look up Antwone Johnson in the Mecklenburg County Jail and (horray), he's still there --

    http://arrestinquiryweb.co.mecklenbu...astDayArrests=

He has a previous arrest for B/E with force back in 2007 so who knows if he's the one that stole it or if he just bought it, but eitherway... fucking thieves! The douche bag was arrested for the stolen vehicle, driving while his license is revoked, speeding and reckless driving with willful/wanton disregard -- so I'm guessing he was weaving in and out of traffic, speeding and thats what made the traffic cop notice him.

From what I understand, the insurance company owns the bike now but I'm thankful to know they finally cought the guy.

I wonder if it was the engine # that linked you to the bike
if the vin # was gone?
I was under the impression that the manufactor was the only
people that could make the match, unless you gave them that #
when it was stolen. I think most people dont know thier engine #
    let alone thier vin #.

So I put out the question, how many people know thier engine #,
or at least wrote it down and put it away.

At least he got caught and will do some time, not many bike
    thieves get caught.

That's great news Clovis! It's always a good feeling when thieves get theirs. Bash also made a good point about the engine #. Going to write mine down right now. Yeah track bike sounds good!

I'm not sure what happens to the bike now -- I called Allstate and the claims rep said since it was paid out that the local (in NC) Allstate usually handles the salvage but they would start working on it and get back to me as far as a buy back option.

From what the guy at the wrecker told me the bike appears to be in good shape.

As far as the guy himself, who knows if he's the one that stole it or was just on it when he got busted -- he's been in and out of the NC DOC since 2005 (amazing what you can find on the internet these days) for breaking and entering and assault convictions.

They wouldn't send it back. There was a impound yard near my work that was always getting stolen cars and bikes from out of state and they usually issue it a title to the impound yard and they sell it at auction. The insurance company doesn't care. I have seen nice bikes go for less than a thousand sometimes. But it all depends on what they get in there.

I haven't replaced it -- still just have the FZ6 which I've often had more fun with anyways (the higher, wider handle bars give the rider much more leverage for throwing the bike around in the corners) -- The R1 was great for it's raw-power but I prefer running through Deckers beyond just 2nd gear

All though, the '10 R1 looks pretty tempting, I saw Dallas's a few weeks ago.
