    Mladin retires

Very dignified and restrained in his press release:

Hacking out for this round, Mladin retiring after the 2009 season.

It's been coming anyways, he's been out there a long time and made a great career of it. I've enjoyed him much more in the later years than in his earlier career, while he hasn't lost the fire, he's been much more dignified in his approach and I think that he is speaking for a greater good more and less in self interest than he ever has before.

Congrats on a long and fantastic career Mat!

Ditto. I've always enjoyed his honest and straightforward view on things.

Honestly, glad to see him go. Haven't been a big fan of Mladin but I will give him credit for speaking out this year against the DMG way of doing business.

Not doubting the guys talent, just think he coasted to much in the AMA and should have moved on to WSBK or GP. Early in his career he did go 1 or maybe 2 years in GP but it didn't go well. Once he started dominating AMA he never semed to have the desire to move up and challenge himself any more.

I know the guy is good, just dissapointed he did't step up to the next level.

Sad face. I will miss Mat a lot.

He made the competition stronger in AMA and without pushing the limits, people like Hayden, Spies and Hacking wouldn't be where they are today. He took training to a whole new level. While his early years were a bit more crazy, his past 10 years made the AMA a respectable race organization and proved they produce world class racers. Unfortunately, DMG has undone everything Mat has worked for (Mary Spies might have contributed as well).

Have a great retirement Mat. You'll be missed!

Tough break for Suzuki as well. Hopefully he keeps on with them in some form or fashion.

I remember back when this was a current issue and he was dominating every race on the circuit and he was being asked this question a lot. Don't remember his exact words but he basically said given his age (early to mid 30's even back then), he had no illusions about going over to MotoGP and kicking Rossi's ass. He figured why move to Europe and risk greater injury learning a new bike and new circuits only to end up a struggling mid-packer at best, when he could finish out his remaining years in the AMA winning races and being a champion.

Even at the top of his game, when he was completely dominating in the AMA, he still was very honest with himself and spoke very candidly with the public. Thats one of the things I liked most about Mat.

    Re: Mladin retires

he's been getting paid WAY more to race ama these past umpteen years than wsbk or a satellite gp would have ever paid him. i heard the only reason spies went over was b/c all kinds of cash considerations were finagled to get him there. AND that he is still taking a pay cut.

anyway. two years ago i would have loved to hear that effin cheatin suzuki paycheck sandbagger was leaving. now i am actiually sad cause he didnt seem to have a problem telling the new ama/dmg where to stick it.

It's sad that it had to come to this, good thing it's getting a lot of attention and putting pressure on AMA.

Glad to see him go. I think he was a jerk. None of that matters- he was one of the best to ever race in the AMA. And you can bet he doesn't care what I think!

Great guy to watch, but glad he spoke up before he left completely.
