They embarked on that whole "THE" kick in the 90's I believe. I guess they felt there was confusion with Ohio University and OSU (Oregon State or Oklahoma). I always thought it was dumb too.

Nope! Ohio State was there first. Ohio State was founded 20 years prior to Oklahoma State, the website www.osu.edu goes to Ohio State's website, and the last time OSU played OSU, Ohio State won by 30 someodd points.
