    Are LED's legal in Colorado?

I've been wanting to put some LED's on my bike for better night visibility but have been reluctant because I am not sure of the legality. Does anyone know if it's legal? I know undercarriage lights on a car are illegal, but not sure about bikes.

Well I was hoping legally gay. I was thinking the lights would compliment my Hello Kitty stickers and rainbow streamers on my handle bars.

Pinks is the obvious color choice. FWIW, I bought my bike with some very gay purple LED's on it, which I proceeded to rip out.

Yeah, I figured Red and Blue lights would be out. Unfortunetly, I think blue would be the only color I think would look cool. Oh well. Guess I'll have to find another way to impersonate police officers *cough*

Re: Are LED's legal in Colorado?

I had my Banshee street legal for a while, so I'm pretty familiar with the DOT regulations...

My understanding is that LED's themselves are not illegal. The laws only specify that certain colors are allowed to be seen from certain directions.

If the lights are visible from the back and side, you can use Amber, Yellow, Red, or White. If they are visible from the front, only Amber, Yellow and White.

Whether they are LED's or not doesn't really matter.
I'm old enough to know better, but still too young to care...

You can probably get away with red &/or blue lights as long as you have a switch for them and don't turn them on while riding on the street. If it's just parking lot glow you're looking for you'd probby be fine

    Depends on the use.
    Will the bike:
    be in motion?
have more than 2 driving lights?

Well, I don't particularly care about the looks aspect(although it would look kinda cool), I was more concerned with being more visible at night. White lights may be a good idea. Thanks guys.

Re: Are LED's legal in Colorado?

Im curious on this subject as well. I am planning a LED system for my bike to supplement the signal lights, but the only color that would look good is red I think, or blacklight(cool for a dark parking lot, otherwise worthless). On one setting(parking lot) it would just be LEDs, no headlight or signals. On another setting, when the turn signal comes on, the LEDs on that side of the bike flash along with the signals. And on the same setting, when I stop the whole bike either lights up or flashes. And the third setting will be no LEDs. There isnt a whole lot to my bike and while I am probably just barely within (most of) the legal stipulations, visibilty is a concern of mine. On late night rides when I am sitting at a light, I get paraniod that Im going to get plowed from behind and never see it coming since I cant really turn to see whats directly behind me. Im also installing a 140dB air horn to deter people from drifting into my lane
