    Novice class tires

I know this should probably be under tech.. but..

I plan on doing a few novice races this year.. a friend who used to race suggested I just get street compound tires.. I am only running very inconsistant 1:20's at SCR so I am still real slow and my bike and tires are way faster than me.. so does anyone disgaree with this? Also, novice allows race compound right ? If not its a no brainer of course..

If you guys agree, anybody have suggestion on brand/model??

I'd say if you are going to be racing get a set of race tyres...

Talk to Brian at TK... Get a set of the Bridgestone 002.

They are great tyres and wont cost an arm and leg. As you get faster you'll want the race compound, and 250$-350$ for a set of race tyres is a LOT cheaper then clip ons, rear sets etc.. that was trashed cuz you pushed a set of street tyres too far.

    Just my worthless 2 cents

    Re: Novice class tires

I agree definately! spend the money on the tires. The brand is not as important as how you feel on your tires, find one brand of tire and stick to it and learn how it acts; while learning (and as I am too!) you dont want to throw in more unknowns by switching tires all the time, but one thing for sure get a race set.

As for the tires being allowed in novice, the only restirction on tires in any class is slick vs dot tread. And as for novice and am ANYTHING goes... basically as long as your within the engine size for the class U or O, you can do whatever you want to the bike except nitrous lol (but that IS allowed in ROR haha) and stay w/in the fuel requirements

    Yes, Novice allows race compound.

If you're only going to run a couple of races, you could probably get away with street tires, but race tires would be the way to go. From what you described, you could probably even get away with slightly used race take-offs.

Definitelly use race tires, in my opinion. MotoXOutlet are good people too. I have gotten a few things from them, killer deals and hassle free And for that price for race pilot powers, i may have to get me some

What about installation? Can I do this myself? Whats the grassroots method?

    Re: Novice class tires

My $0.02: definetly race rubber!! I think they are a world of diffrence.

As for install, I think it cost $20 to have them done at TK (they will probably do it free if it is Bridgestone). Mark Schelleneger (Michelin) will mount them for free, and Mark Newby (Dunlop) will sometimes mount them for free if you rub him the right way.

If you are worried about life of the tires, you can probably have them swapped back to your street tires after the races.

As for brand it gets sticky. I think you can be competative on any of the major brands. However some people find that they have trouble with a certain brand of tire, most imprtantly feed-back/grip/life/price/service. I say if you got the funds try them all, which will also give you a chance to meet the vendors and see what they are willing to do for you.

If you have a tire iron you can do it yourself but it's a pain in the ass....not as bad as a dirtbike tire though. You would still have to get it balanced though. Not worth the trouble when you can get it down cheap at varous shops around town like the ones that Eugene mentions above.

I would give COGXXR a call, Wally has a tire machine and will do you a great price. You can bring the tires to him or ride the bike down to him.

Price is 50 on the bike or 25 off. Thats both. not singles.

Not sure how you are doing it.. I come up with $297.. includes $20.00 shipping.. 180/55/17 and 120/70/17.. medium compound.

Performance Cycle will go $305.00 .. this way I help out a local vendor..

I did find a set of dunlop 208gp's for $270 shipped to my door. Is this a good tire?

Do the 208gp stack up to the Michelin Pilot Race? I think $270 is a killer deal.. and they are in stock!

    Joe
Disclaimer: The following is just my opinion, so keep that in mind.

First you have to make the distinction between the two different sets of Michelins and the two different sets of Dunlops.

    Michelin sets:
    1. PR set (two differnt choises of fronts, 3 different choises of rears) - $370 retail but you can probably bargain for that, or find a online deal
    2. Medium set (that deal you found)

    Dunlop sets:
    1. US front, UK rear - $327 + shipping
    2. US front, US rear - $259 (before Newby increased prices) + shipping, don't know what the are now.

    My ranking:
    1. Michelin PR set - Out of this world, I think it is better then the Michelin slick, also I am getting preaty good life out of them
    2. Michelin Medium Set -preat similar probably a little better in warmer weather then the Dunlop UK/US
    2. Dunlop US/UK set - preaty similar, probably a little better in colder weather then Michelin Medium
    4. Dunlop US/US set - worthless, worse initial grip, and i wasted a set in about 30 mins.

Also keep in mind that different people have different opinions of tire vendors. Some people will not run brand XXXXXXXX, because of vendor. While others had issues with brand YYYYYYYYY, because the vendor would not know the compound for a confidential tire.

    Re: Novice class tires

Sorry about that JAPRULES, The prices went up 10 bucks a tire since I got mine. someone must have told them what a good deal they had bastards.

Still cheaper than you can get them locally. I was quoted 215 for rear only.

    Anyway, sorry about that.

    Joe,

The combo on the GSXR were S2 front and M2 rear....at least when you bought the bike.

I agree with both ebazyl and lel. Everybody has their opinions as to what tire is best, however that is subjective. You need to find out what works for you. By the way the 600's suspension was set up to use the S2/M2 Michelin combo. If you change ... talk with Marcus of RPS for the proper set up.

Even a set of take offs is better than a set of street rubber. You can find a number of fast guys who will only put a ROR on a set and turn around and sell for $80-$100 at the track...just ask around

The things that I looked for were:

    Tire Life/performance
    Price
    Vendor Support
