    Which would make a good track bike? I'm looking at a few 01 929RR, FZR1000, GSXR750.

    Which would make a good track bike? I'm looking at a few: 01 929RR, FZR1000, 96 GSXR750 SRAD, 06 ZZR 600 & a 98 Superhawk (dual pipes still).

I'm so used to my huge 600lb bulky ZX11, I'm not sure which would make the best track bike, granted all of these are pending my inspection and all are within my price range with another grand or two left over for some supplies for the track. Right now I'm thinking the 929RR or GSX750 will be good enough, I realize they won't be as fast in a straight line as my 11 but they will probably out-manuever it easily.

    Opinions?

Between the 929 and 750 I'd go with the 750. My 954, very similar to the 929 was not very much fun on the track. Suspension even after upgrades still not so good. 750 FTW.

On the contrary, I enjoy my 929 on the track. Granted, I don't have much for comparison, but my suspension is drastically undersprung and I'm closing in on midpack novice times quickly. Plus it will be fun to (bigtime hopefully) beat out some Vintage people in 2 years with 70cc's less than them

    no 600 options?

Power means nothing on the track until you can use it. I've blown by many people on newer 1000's on my 10 year old R6 because I had better lines through the corners, better breaking, etc. Yeah, they may catch me in the straights, but that doesn't mean much if you're not actually racing.

Personally, I think a 600 is the better option for a track bike, and it's a better stepping stone into actual racing than a bigger engine. The ZZR is the old body-style Ninja right? I'd say that one, or the 929

I agree with Brian - think about 600s. Plenty power, and if you eventually decide to race, there will be more class options available to you.

Sorry dude but those all suck most are sport touring bikes and the GSXR is as old as I am, almost, but that is the only one on the list I would consider. Find a prepped track bike (600) and save yourself the time and trouble.

Precisely why I can afford them, but I wouldn't call the 929 too old or a sport tourer in comparison to my 93 sport touring zx11

80-90% of any given track is turns, coupled with your skill level. Buy a bike for that.

How do you figure those are sport touring bikes? Just wondering where you are coming from.

I would go with the 929rr, Zach looked good out there on his. The GSXR750 is pretty old, especially bike motorcycle technology standards. The rest I don't see as great track bikes. Then again, anything can be fun out there. Think about what's in your $ range and what's comfortable.

    My personal $0.02
+1 With Brian and Peter. The speed comes from you, not the bike. 600's are easy to toss in the corners and have more power and potential than you or I will ever use. Plus they are cheap and easy to get parts for. There are plenty of guys with some size to them that make a 600 go real quick.

SV's are supposed to be really fun!

Stewie, your height does not equal CC's. Your body weight and height, coupled with the right suspension is what you need - not CC's. Get a 600 and set it for your weight - not height. Ride the crap outta it and learn skills on that bike. Learn your lines, your ability in speed, your ability in turns. It will be the best favor you can do for yourself.

The liter bikes are hard sh$t to ride at the track unless you are expert level. You simply won't be able to use that power on the track as an older-newer rider. Nor will you be able to learn properly on a liter bike. Get your level of riding in check first on a 600, then move up, down the road if you need to.

I didn't mean I need 1000cc for my weight, I just need a frame that I fit on nicely, leg and torso wise I'd like to be able to not bang my knees into the frame while sitting on it, I don't care if it's 1000, 1400 or 600, I just want the newer technology than my current bike with much better cornering.

Rossi could take a 250 and stomp most all of us on a 600

I'm taking a gander at the SV this weekend, I don't care about a dented tank, just gotta replace the frameslider and a few other pieces (probably don't even care about the passenger peg as I plan this to be track only)

For you I would say maybe R6 or 636 or higher ish. I know men in the MRA that can ride the snot out of an SV. Please don't underestimate those lil bikes. They are nimble and quick with the right rider. Swoosh!!!!

A good rider does more for a bike, then the good bike does for the rider.

Joe is tall as hell and rode the crap out of an RC-51. Maybe look at that option for your weight if that's what you really want. They are big bikes. Plenty of power and maybe up your alley if that what you want. Plenty of space for you to learn on, plenty of bike for you. Maybe too much.

    03 gsxr 750...I know a guy who's got a real clean one

are you planning or racing, or just doing track days, you might want to consider what class/classes you will be eligible for.

I vote for the SV though. Cheap, easy to modify and find parts for. You can run it sans bodywork and not look like an asshat...

As others have said, if you looking for something track dedicated, get something thats been prepped, sprung close to your weight if possible.

Sounds like my plan is to hold out for a bike that's already set up for a rider of similar weight, we'll see how the SV650 is this weekend otherwise look for something too hard to pass up (as I'm just planning on track days for now so no hurry for now as no tracks days for awhile).

Plus cheaper bikes during the winter

    Stewie,

There is a lot of good advice above and I agree strongly with the following recommendations:

    1) Find something already track prepped, it will save you some headache. Old racebikes are a pretty good value actually.

    2) Go small. 600 or an SV. They are great bikes, there is a truckload of parts available for them if you fall down and half of the paddock has spares, oil filters, etc for them if you need a bit in a hurry.

Looking forward to seeing you at the track!

    Scott
