    AVG Questions

I have a few questions about AVG Free and what it's telling me.

1.) It finds 20+ tracking cookies every time I run it (maybe every 2-3 times I use the computer), and they're always the same ones. Same names that is. Is there not a way to block these things in the first place, and what exactly is a tracking cookie?

2.) I ran it yesterday and found two "Trojan horse Dropper.Generic2.CKPW" files. They were both found in "C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\QTTask.exe". AVG also found a "registry key with reference to infected file C:\Program Files (X86)\QuickTime\QTTask.exe". It's tagged as a "potentially dangerous object", found in "HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft \Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\\QuickTime Task". I googled the Dropper.Generic thing and the first site was the Apple forum, where it was apparently listed as a false positive. Does that mean the rest isn't an issue?

3.) I'm also showing 171 registry errors and 260 junk files. How do you get rid of them?

    Re: AVG Questions

I would recommend removing AVG Free and install Microsoft Security Essentials....AVG was ok a year or so ago but now Microsofts free product is better to use as a free solution because AVG and others with consistently try to "upsell" you to get their paid version. Also run Malwarebytes free (but i recommend paid) to watch and clean spyware.

Now that my soapbox is out of the way:

    1. Tracking cookies are normal, you get them everytime you go online, you can clean them but they will come back, its "normal" you need them but its ok to clean them.

    2. I would run Malwarebytes, AVG doesnt focus enough on spyware to always get it right (of course Malwarebytes isnt perfect but their main focus is spyware) False positive just means they "guess" its spyware. I write some scripts for work that get flagged as spyware but they arent....just the software trying to be proactive and "guessing"

    3. Eh I dont trust reg cleaners, i havent found a great one and because the registry is the brains of your computer and if they clean one good thing thinking its bad youre hosed....perhaps someone else know a good trustful cleaner, but personally i just leave it alone.

    Re: AVG Questions

ive used a program called registry mechanic, and it works well enough. it identifies problems, and you can go through and select which ones you want it to deal with, and which ones to ignore (which you should always do).

i only use it if i really have to, and always create a restore point prior to. it's a risk, but it's either reformat/reimage, or clean up the registry and continue as is.
