    road music/gps/phone/blah blah blah

With several fairly lengthy bike trips planned for 2011, I've decided that it's time I start using that stupid iphone for more then just a phone. Seeing as how there are some quality GPS apps launching, I figured it would be nice to consolidate the gadgets and try to get the most out of what I already own.

    So here's my idea:
    -Bar Ram Mount
-Otter Box wired to the bike so I can plug the phone in while in the box
-iphone 4 loaded up w/ mp3s, audio books, pandora, slacker and a GPS application (Garmin just launched a really nice looking one)

    Here's where it gets fuzzy
I'm hoping some of you have suggestions on helmet/speaker/mic combos that would work via bluetooth.

    suggestions?

As for iPhone apps, check out accuterra. It's not a gps directions application, but uses GPS to display your position and track on topo maps. I've used it a ton on the dirt bike, and it's a great tool.

If you find out which headsets let you use your own headphones, let me know.

^^ part of my research... I'm considering having a pair of earplugs made that have headphones in them. Help cut down on road noise and fatigue and what not.

Check out Ear Inc. in Boulder (off of Arapahoe) for custom plugs with speakers. Outstanding. They advertising in national motorcycle magazines, and they're right there in Boulder.

That's the only reason I haven't gotten communications yet. I always have either ear plugs in, or my headphones that are basically earplugs w/ music. I don't think I could ride w/out either of those.

Well I definitely want to get some custom ones made. I've tried to ride with earbuds in but they just piss me off more then anything.

I've seen earinc mentioned on advrider and st.net so I guess I'll have to venture up to Boulder one of these days **shutter**

Are you expecting to get turn-by-turn GPS through the Iphone and play music? If so I havent had a lot of luck getting it to do all that seamlessly.

I'm not so concerned w/ audible directions, more the visual. Hell, if I can work both, I'd be happy... but it's not a deal breaker.

I haven't installed it yet but the Garmin StreetPilot advertises the ability to multitask with iOS4 and run music at the same time. I'll let you know if it works.

I have the custom molded musician's filtered plugs. They are comfortable enough to wear them all day long. Only problem is that I can't listen to music with them in. I will be using them for a 16 day trip to Alaska this summer.

OK... what the hell is hanging off the bottom of your phone?!

I was looking at the ram mounts like that, but figured I could build something that I wouldn't have to worry about. Or scramble if it starts to rain.

Using an otter box, ram mount, and a charger cable - I think I can get what I want.

Do a search for waterproof phone covers and I think this pic pops up

Got those off a ADVrider ride report. Just thought it was funny. No clue what the play-doh gunk is on the bottom of the phone.

well, got an email back from the Otter Box people.

"Nothing we have will work but we'll forward your request to our product design team"

...I may end up with the ziploc bag afterall...

This looks pretty good. ($50) I may give it a try. The bicycle mount strength sorta worries me but I have a Garmin bike GPS on my 800gs now and I've taken that around Moab with no problems (plastice lightweight mount).

    Re: road music/gps/phone/blah blah blah

now that's what I'm talking about! thanks...

Although, I agree. I'm not a fan the zip tie type mount, I'd probably try to use a ram mount of some kind. Thank you for the link... I'm going to look into this one further.

I just shot Dahon an email asking about a case for the 4... let's hope they have something.

On a related note, there are several out there on Amazon

I looked up some reviews on it. The older case got bad reviews for the locking mech, not working great. But the new case for the iPhone 4 looks much more solid with a much larger locking mech.
