Any work out there at all? I'll take almost anything!

My education is in Architectural design and computer aided drafting. I've done about everything in between, too. Structural, mechanical, electrical, custom restaurant equipment, custom signs, race car frames. Just about anything that can be drawn with a computer, I have done.

Here's my problem. I can't even get a job at Jiffy Lube because they want a resume and experience. Honestly, how hard is it to remove a drain plug?!?

I've driven fork lifts since I was a kid and can't get a job doing that becaue I'm not 'certified'.

I do all my own work on everything, home and vehicles. Plumbing, drywall, electrical, all vehicle maintenance including rebuilding engines.

I can pretty much do anything, but if they want a resume, all I have to show is the last twenty years of architectural/engineering and CAD work.

Those that know me know that I'm very detail oriented and do things the "right way"!! The mechanic at a dealership definitely has more experience than me, but I can almost guarantee I'll do a better job!

I even know how to work a shovel and a broom...

If you're halfway serious about the forklift, most rental yards like RSC will give you a 30 minute "class" and you get a card. Not sure if it's the certification you're talking about.

Trust me. This market sucks for job hunting.

My wife is out there right now looking and every job wants 5+ years of experience for $9 per hour. Such a crock of shit.

Already hit those. Got 'em less than five minutes after they were posted.

I'll check into that RSC deal. That would be cool if it's the cert.

Dean, not sure what sites you are hitting already but give these a try:

    http://www.cadcamrecruiters.com/

    http://www.i-recruit.com/drecruiters...ngineering.htm

    http://www.computeraideddesigncrossi...ruiters/L/pg-1

    http://www.careerjet.com/cad-design-jobs.html

    www.coloradojobs.com

    www.computerjobs.com

    www.dice.com

    www.thingamajob.com

I would also highly recommend hitting up KC (Notto) if you can.

Spend a few hours scouring the web for telecommuting jobs in your field. I found a bunch out there when I was looking.

You are computer saavy enough to get a gig doing "rack and stack" type work installing hardware at a datacenter. I see those gigs all of the time.

Shit man, Home Depot pays OK too and you have one pretty close.

If you have a resume with your CAD experience all brushed up you should go door to freaking door hitting all of the places that have mills, do design work, have a machine shop, etc. The Door to Door technique has worked VERY well for me in the past. It also gets your ass out of the house for a while.

Good luck Dean. It is getting much better out there. Something good will happen for you soon man. Keep positive. That is the HARDEST part, I know.

Dean - I've been keeping an eye out for you, but the job market for cad ppl has been really bad. I was over at the Avatech offices a couple of weeks ago and it was like a ghost town. I think they laid off all their cad trainers execpt for about 3. I've also talked with a couple people at architecht firms and they don't seem ready to start hiring people back.
At some point, the company that I am working for will need another cad person, but we haven't got funding for the position yet. We've been waiting forever and have no indication on when we are hiring - it could be next week, or it could be two years from now. But, when I do hear of something, I will let you know.

Right on, bro!! Yeah, everyone seems to be out of business or on the verge of. The other architects and engineers I used to work with have actually hit me up for work. That was about a year ago. Most are out of business, now. Out of the six or seven builders I used to work with, only one is left and he moved into his basement and layed everyone else off. Starts to seem hopeless after a point!!

    LOL!!!!

We are seeing most anything related to construction is still way down.

Manufacturing is picking up. Most people are busy and hiring. I hear they are struggling to find good people - believe it or not. Most hiring managers say it's tough to get people off the couch and come to work when the government keeps extending benefits. Some of the smaller shops are still slow and struggling. I've talked to a few who were about to shut the doors.

Move on to the next door and you'll find they are busy.

    Okay, so here we go...

I've already got one (I'm guessing you know that, though. Being as you pointed out 4-axis), but all the pinheads on here that contact me for parts say that all they need is the part cut. When in reality, they need the part designed, drawn, modeled, g-code created and then we can cut the part. But they only want to pay for the cutting, they expect everything else for free. Or were you just being a dick with your response and I really didn't need to answer that?

no I wasnt being a dick, i didnt even knew you had one, but i can see how that would be a problem, i can imagine that most dont realize the work that goes into it, the only way to counter that is to make small runs of parts (rearsets, exhaust mounts, pegs, etc) for a specfic model, but then you run into the issue of being stuck with stuff, so maybe it was a bad idea after all, unless you could find something that was almost universal and put your own twist on it.. well i might need parts made up in the near future, and im willing to pay what it really costs, so i will hit you up..

that's some funny shit there. I thought for sure it was a reference to the "for sale" thread.

I'm certain you speak the truth Dean. People expect to pay hardware store bulk bin prices. All of US manufacturing is facing the same problem. And the companies that learn how to make two parts as affordable as 2000 are the only ones who keep their work from going to China or Mexico.

When I bought the machine, I thought it would open a huge door for people that don't have access to something like this. I could spend a couple days to a week or more designing a part and people only want to pay the $20 for material. Even copying a part takes time to measure, draw and model. Then you still have to create the g-code. Call a machine shop and have your heart medication nearby when they tell you their rates!!

No problem, man - I'll let you know what I hear. Also, check out www.cadtalent.com. One of our cad developers at work was saying that this is a good site to find cad jobs.

Bank tellers are required to be hot

it's like the last place, next to hooters, where they still get to hire based on looks.
