Everybody knows you need an awesome core...

    to ride motorcycle.

As it turns out, you also need an awesome core for many things in the rest of your non-riding life.

I need new ink. Before I can get new ink I need to reach a goal and that goal is to have a super-star core. I know there are several people on this board who are fitness buffs, racers, trainers, etc and I KNOW you all know a few tricks to an awsome core. I'm asking for your help.

This is what's part of my program thus far:

    1) Ab Marches - arms included
    2) Straight arm plank
    3) Plank on elbows
    4) Bird/Dogs
    5) Pelvis tilts (nobody make fun of this, it works)
    6) Good old fashioned crunches

What I'm not looking for is amazing abs. Abs do not = core strength. Core strength needs to come first for me.

    Who's got help!!?

Core Synergistic on P90X, along with Ab Ripper. Those will really do it for you.

Check out bodyrock tv. It's kind of like softcore porn, but she does a lot of great core/stability exercises. I think the older stuff is a little better, but it should start you with some different ideas.

    How true.
I got really sick one year and my whole body paid the price. Doc said exercise, so I got a trainer at the gym. She pushed core. Here are some of the things she had me do, although I won't probably define them correctly.

    1. Lay on a bench an lift your legs. (is this static Dave?)
    2. Body dips off the same bench.
    3. Planks
    4. Push ups. Put one hand on a medicine ball. Do a push up, lift your arm and body sideways and reach for the sky. Alternate arms.
    4. Swiss ball jackknife:
Assume a pushup position with your arms completely straight. Rest your shins on a Swiss ball. Your body should form a straight line form your head to your ankles
Without changing your lower-back posture, roll the Swiss ball toward your chest by pulling it forward with one foot, lifting the opposite leg in the air as you pull the ball forward
    5. One-legged dead lifts on a balancing cushion.

Just the one's I can remember off the top of my head.
"Keep that "what if" thought in the back of your mind; it's the angel on your shoulder balancing the devil in your right hand."

Re: Everybody knows you need an awesome core...

I just want to make note that most of the exercises that are mentioned here are ab exercises. While the abs are a significant portion of your core muscles they are not all of them. A true core workout program will incorporate a series of exercises that will engage all of the core muscles.

The reason that I am familiar with this is the concentration of improving the core muscles after my back surgery. You would be amazed at how improving your core can make a huge difference in your life.

Here are a few links that will help with the definition of the core muscles and strengthening them:
Core muscles are more than just abs
    Basic core exercises
Using an exercise ball to develop the core
If you think you have a strong core, try some of these

P90x level 3, cardio, perfect diet!

Abs are basically diet and being lean! Everyone has decent abs to show, but you need to burn the fat for them to be seen.

P.S. If you are a beer drinker, stop if you want abs!

he said he wasn't concerned with showing them, he just wants the strength in his core. but you nailed it on the head, if you arent one of those people who has a six pack showing your whole life, its all about the diet and getting as lean as possible.

It has always been my issue since I need the calories to keep building muscle, but try my best to balance it to keep my abs showing.

To build strong abs then just concentrate on using the ab machines that allow you to put weight on them; or any abs exercises you can do with added weight! Do as mush weight as you can to trigger those "secondary" muscles that only kick in when you struggle. Those are the muscles that get strong! Mix that with P90X to hit those hard to trigger muscles is what I do!

I've had abs and they'll be back one day. For now - I need a rockstar core so I can move without injury. THEN - watch out world

Until then i'll be beating my core muscles into shape....climbing backwards upstairs. This - btw - is kinda fun!

If you need the P90X abs workout I have it on file and can share it (probably would have to meet up since the file is fairly large). I also work out at the 24 Hour Fitness at Santa Fe and Belleveiw 5 days a week, so if you need help I would be willing to show you some ab exercises I do.

Don't underestimate diet though! Even if you are not concerned with showing abs, diet will still help to build muscle faster!

    Thanks Bulldog!

I'm no stranger to diet and working out. I've just been living in fear of injury for long enough that I'm sick of it. Time to build the strong core so riding is easier, boarding is possible and I can think about what type of body i want to continue to build.

Right now I miss yoga - that's my goal. Need to get PT approval to practice again and to do that I've got to pass all these core tests. Backing up the stairs I go

Sometimes, while playing COD, I find I have to lean forward on the couch to angle for that perfect shot.

That counts as working my core, right?
