    Using TiVo without the subscription

Anyone using TiVo without the subscription? I want to record the races and was thinking to get DVR but Comcast is charging $16 a month. I found used TiVo’s on CL and was wondering if I can use TiVo without the subscription.

buy one with a lifetime subscription off of ebay.... all you do is hook it up and turn it on... should be about $150. Otherwise, you can get a new one for free with a 2 year contract and pay $20/month

I thought Tivos just work like a VCR without a subscription as in:

Pause and rewind live tv<--- ok not like a VCR

Record via time (example: 5pm till 6:10pm) <---Like the old days with VCRs

You can use it like a VCR, by setting it by time. You just have to avoid letting it connect to the Internet or make a phone call. I've been using my old one (upgraded to primer earlier this year) this way in my bed room. Not sure what happens if it connects to the Internet after the subscription ends so I have avoided letting mine connect. You should be ok if it was last used while in the subscription period.
