    VF500F Rear Suspension

Ok, I've been riding my Interceptor for a while since getting it up and running again... the one thing I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to was the suspension, and now it's time.

As far as I can tell (search the interwebs, ask parts guy at Honda dealer, etc.) I'm going to just have to replace the rear, and I can rebuild the front.

    Suggestions?
-I've already got my parts ordered for the front, just need to focus on rear...

    Thanks!
    -Peter

My solution was to find a used one from a low-mileage part-out. You might give Jamie Daugherty a ring for a solution using a more modern shock:

I'm waiting for an email back from him.

I can get one of these:

    for $394

Let me know how it works out. My 500 is probably good for a while but the 750 is going to need a new shock.

On my 3rd gen 750, I went with a low miles 929 shock off fleabay for about $40. Had to fabricate my own adapter to mount it. My 1990 became a whole new bike and it was the best $40 I ever spent. It's also rebuildable when I want to take it in to the suspension guys.

    I wonder if there's any chance of a 929 fitting on a 500?

In your case, you mentioned on VFRW about riding double?

I will be doing double occasionally... just got the GF a set of safety gear.

JD lists the following compatibility-wise with his modifications ($270 incl a new spring)

    • 1991-1993 CBR600F2
    • 1994 CBR600F2 ()
    • 1995-1998 CBR600F3 ()
    • 1999+ CBR600F4 / F4i ()
    • CBR900RR all years ()

    - Some additional modifications may be required to mount remote reservoir or remote spring preload adjuster

probably about as good a price as you'll get anywhere. He can be a bit slow sometimes. Especially now heading into riding season.

If you can find one of those shocks off fleabay, you might find it's not rocket science to adapt a mount and someone locally can rebuild the shock with a new spring for your weight.

Any places locally to look to source out that shock other than Flebay?

Steele's in Lakewood(?) but I wouldn't buy a newspaper from those guys after a few terrible customer service experiences I've had with them.
