SV question

1st off, yes...I've searched the forums here and at SVrider. I've done the checks they suggested but am still without an answer.

Hoping someone here may have had the same issue before I run this thing to the shop. If it's an easy fix, I'd love to do it myself.

Here goes:

I own a 2001 SV650 S with 24,XXX miles. In the last week I've noticed a very small oil leak on the left side of the bike (2 or 3 drops). Looking through the threads here and at SVrider I did a little bit of trouble shooting.

The oil is appearing to accumulate near the hex bolts on the bottom of the crankcase. There is NO oil leaking or accumulated around the drain plug. I've cleaned the area, ran the bike and, of course....it's refusing to leak for me now.

I've read about a leak originating near the clutch on this year/model of bike but have been unable to find any information on the fix for it.

Anybody have any suggestions??

I would bet that oil is escaping around the wires coming out of the stator cover. If you check the stator, you should see some wires coming out of it. Clean the area, and then run the bike; if you see oil anywhere in the area, that is your leak. If it is, hit me up, and I will help you fix it.

No oil leak in the three day's since I cleaned it up.....I did change the oil/filter at the same time and no leaks since then.

For now, I'm gonna assume it was @ the drain plug or filter (since those are the only 2 things I've changed). I'll keep you posted if it returns.

I had the same issue on my zx7 almost word for word no one could help and shops said clean the oil and just deal with it. After about 6 months of this I backed of all my oil pan bolts just a little then re touqed them per the clymer book. Have had no more issues. Its a quick easy thing to do but sence you just changed the oil maybe just check the tourqe.

I've got a very small and infrequent oil leak on the left side of my SV (also a 1stGen). Initial word is that it's a gasket, but I haven't confirmed yet. It's at the bottom left of the underside of the bike, and I get about a single drop every other day or so.

Billygoatpete, let's keep each other in mind when it comes to SV maintenance, especially since we have the same generation (mine's a 2000, but naked). I need to learn a lot when it comes to bike maintenance in general, and it'd be great to feed off each others' knowledge. I'm in Littleton, not far at all from Englewood ("hood" indeed =P).
