    Mountain Pass Conditions

Wasn't sure where to place this notice but just a heads-up from a recent car trip:
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just an update on CONDITIONS in the southwestern part of the state (keep in mind this report is my perspective was from a car):

May 11: La Veta Pass (US160) had snow and hardpack on the roads. Slow-going. It was actively snowing that mid-morning.

May 11: Wolf Creek Pass (US160) was wet with some snow patches. Low visibility due to snow and rain. Cold!

May 13-14: Pagosa to Durango to Cortez was all clear and sunny. Good number of cruisers and sportbikes on US160 and US550. Saw a Ducati Monster rider in Durango! Looked like he lived in the area and was commuting home from work.

May 14: Red Mountain Pass (US550/Million Dollar Hwy) was mostly clear with some sand/gravel on the edges around the sharper corners. Potholes in some areas. Actually saw a few bikes, especially in Silverton and Ouray. Most riders had on cold-weather gear as there was still plenty of snow piles off on the sides.

May 15: Monarch Pass (US 50) was mostly clear on the west slopes. Wet on the east side. Watch out for sand & gravel in the corners. On the chilly side but we still saw a couple bikes make it over.

I think some of these conditions have changed. I was planning on doing a ride with some ADV guys this weekend and a lot of the state has been hit with snow in the past few days. Doesn't look like the rain/sleet/snow is going to ease up this weekend either.

Agreed, and that's why dates are listed. Springtime in the Rockies can bring on Mother Nature's PMS.

I like mountains because they make me feel small.

Just the thread I was looking for!

Considering taking off Memorial Day week and cruising the state, south-west sounds pretty good at the moment.

Anybody have news on US 40? Multiple people recommend it, and it might be fun to pop over to Salt Lake City for a day or three.

Bumping for updates on US 40 from Dinosaur to Steamboat Springs, and CO 14 from Walden to Ft Collins for that matter.

SLC is out, still aiming to hit Moab.

    Here are my updates:

North Pass, CO 114 Saguache to Gunnison, Excellent

Slumgullion Pass, CO 149 Gunnison to South Fork, A little chilly and still excellent

Wolf Creek Pass, CO 160 South Fork to Pagosa Springs, Excellent but construction begins resumes on the 31st according to the road sign

    Re: Mountain Pass Conditions

I would up riding US 40 from Dinosaur to Craig on Monday. Road condition gets a B and the scenery is a monotonous after 15 mins or so. Other than that, is no problem.
